We have some fun events coming up this week that we wanted to make sure you are all aware of. Tomorrow is our Mother/Son dodgeball event sponsored by our PTA. Please join us at 5:30pm in the MPR for pizza and fun.  Fathers and daughters, don't worry, we have a special event coming up for you too. Our Father/Daughter dance is coming up May 1st. Watch for information coming home soon. Friday morning (9:00-11:00) is our Field Day. Kindergarten will be participating in a fun filled morning of games and events planned by the P.E. department. Some games do include water, so be sure to have your child wear clothes that can get wet (no swimsuits). They will also need to wear tennis shoes and sunscreen. Parents are welcome to come and watch.

This past month has been busy. We have worked very hard on our animal reports and the results were fantastic. The students did a great job. Thank you to those who came to visit our Kindergarten Zoo. Our field trip to the zoo was also a success. The kids had a great time and enjoyed seeing all the animals in their different habitats. Thank you to our chaperones. We couldn't do it without you.

We are now into out unit on plants and will follow that with a unit on insects. Third quarter has been one of great growth academically. The students are really starting to put together all of the skills they have learned and are becoming confident readers and writers. Please continue to practice our star words if your child has not mastered them. We have now introduced them all and will continue to review for mastery. Continue to have your child read their book in a big nightly and log it on their "Books I Read" log.

You should have noticed our math sprints coming home. These are timed fact tests to work on fluency. Although we allow students to use their fingers as a strategy in math, if they are relying on them too much, they will not become fluent. Please go over missed problems with your child and help them to practice.

We have a very busy week coming up this week!

The spring book fair is this week. Feel free to send your child in with book fair money and we will be sure to send them down to the library to make their selections.

Spring picture day is Tuesday. Order forms were sent home last week. Only students who pre-order pictures will have their individual pictures taken. All students will be photographed for the class picture.

Zoo animal facts are due on Tuesday.

Donuts with Dad is Wed. at 7:45am. Join your child before school for a donut treat and then stop by the book fair.

Wednesday is our WildLife World Zoo field trip. We are so excited to visit all of the zoo animals we have been reading about. Make sure your child brings a completely disposable sack lunch, wears a Sunset Ridge shirt or school colors, has comfortable, closed toe walking shoes and is dressed for the weather.

Our Spring Carnival is coming up April 5th. This is a great family fun filled event with inflatables, games, activities, food and raffle baskets. The baskets are created by each class and then raffled off as a fundraiser. This is often the most exciting part of the night. Raffle basket letters were sent home last week. We are looking for your donations to make our raffle baskets a success. All donations are due on Friday, March 15th. Also, pre-sale carnival tickets orders are due on March 15th.

    March 16-24 is Spring Break!!!

School yearbooks must be ordered by March 26th. Visit the Sunset Ridge webstie for ordering information.

    February 19, 2019

Next week we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday with Read Across America week. We wanted to give you some advance notice about one of the activities that we will be doing. Sunset Ridge is having a school-wide “Give the gift of Reading” book drive to benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital. We are asking students to bring in a NEW grade/age appropriate book Monday, Feb. 25th-Thursday, Feb. 28th. Books must be new, non-violent and not scary. All books will be donated to Phoenix Children’s Hospital where each child will be given a new book to keep. Please watch for more information about other fun activities that will be taking place next week. Thank you for giving the gift of reading to a child who is ill.

    February 11, 2019

The Sunset Ridge Fun Run is coming soon! This is a great fundraiser that promotes healthy kids and raises money for our school. Please take a few minutes to read through the packet that was sent home with your child. All you need to do is register your student, build their fundraiser page and then send out a few emails and/or post to social media.  All profits made will be used to purchase/fill Chromebook carts for student use. The Fun Run will take place on Feb. 26th. Thank you for supporting our Sunset Ridge Fun Run.

    February 9, 2019

We want to say a big "THANK YOU" to all the parents that took time out of their busy schedules to come in and tell kindergarten about their jobs. We really enjoyed the presentations and the kids learned a lot.

This week student council is selling "Valentine Grams". Information was sent home yesterday. If you would like to purchase a gram for your child or their friends, simply fill out the grams and return them to school with $1.00 for each gram purchased and a candy treat will be delivered on Valentine's day.

Our Valentine's party is on Thursday. If you would like to send in Valentines for your child's class, we are asking that you only have your child sign their name and not address each valentine. They are much easier to deliver this way.

This week is also conference week. Please take the time to visit your class sign up genius to select a time for you and your student to have their conference.

Thursday and Friday are early release days for conferences.

Finally, the last week of February is Read Across America week. Watch for information to come home explaining all of the activities that will be going on.

    February 4, 2019

Our take home reading program is off to a great start. The kids enjoy selecting new books to take home each night. Please continue to support this valuable program by listening to your child read each night, ask them follow up questions from the sheet that was sent home,  log the book on their take home book reading log, and then return it to school in the bag and in their folder the next day.

We are half way through our unit on community helpers. There is still time to sign up for a classroom visit to tell kindergarten about the jobs you do for our community. The kids have enjoyed hearing from the parents that have visited so far.

Conferences are coming up next week. Please watch for a sign up genius from your child's teacher.

    January 13, 2019

Welcome back! We had a great first week back to school. It was great to see the kids and hear about their vacation time. The children have done a good job getting right back into the routines of our classrooms. Remember to check your child's homework folder nightly,  help your child do their homework and to read a book and write it on their monthly reading logs. Third quarter is typically the time of year when we see lots of growth as the kindergartners are starting to put together and apply the skills we have been working on the first half of the year. Celebrate the growth you see in your child's skills!

This week we will celebrate the 100th Day of School. This is a pretty exciting day for us as we celebrate being 100 days smarter. Be sure to help your child complete their 100 Days of School project. Remember, items need to be counted out, labeled and displayed in some way. We can hardly wait to see all of their collections.

It is hard to believe we are already finished with the first quarter. We are looking forward to meeting with everyone this week for conferences. Please be sure to be on time, as we are on a pretty tight schedule. If you haven't signed up yet, please visit you teacher's sign up genius page and schedule a time to meet with your child's teacher. Also, please be sure to visit the book fair when you come to conferences. There are many great books for your child to choose from. Thursday and Friday are early release days to allow for teachers to meet with parents. Please plan ahead for our 12:05 dismissal.

Cookie dough order forms and money are due on Wednesday, October 17th. Thank you for participating!

We are in the process of planning for our fall celebration on Oct. 26th. There are still some items and volunteers needed to make this a success. Please see the email that was sent out with the sign up genius link. As a reminder, students are NOT wearing their Halloween costumes to our celebration.

    Oct. 1, 2018

Thank you to everyone that participated in our school spirit week fundraiser. It was fun to see so many of the kids dress up.

Our PTA cookie dough sales fundraiser kicked off last week. Your child should have brought home the infomation on Friday. Our PTA does great things for our school, so please help support them in this fundraiser.

We are coming to the end of the first quarter already. Wow, how time does fly. The kids are adjusting and settling into routines and expectations nicely. We have now introduced all of the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds. Your child should be able to name most, if not all, of the upper and lower case letters and most of the common sounds. If you child is struggling in this area please help them practice at home.

Conference time is coming soon. Please watch for information about scheduling a conference with your child's teacher by the end of this week.

    Sept 10, 2018

Thank you to all of you who have sent in headphones for our iPad use and cereal boxes for our book boxes. If you haven't sent these items in yet please do so soon.

We have enjoyed our last three weeks reading books about bears. We have read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, various versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and Corduroy. We have been practicing retelling, identifing characters and settings, and comparing different versions of the same story. We enjoyed wrapping up our bear unit with our Teddy Bear picnic. The kids had a great time having a snack with their kindergarten friends and their stuffed friends. The next few weeks we will be reading various nursey rhymes and doing different activities with them.

We are continuing to work on learning each letter, it's corresponding sound and the correct handwriting formation. We also working on identifing beginning sounds in words and distinguishing rhyming words. In math we are working on counting with one to one correspondence in various configurations (linear, circular, and scattered) and writing the correct corresponding number.

Please continue to help your child practice these skills at home.

Next week is our first school wide spirit week. Watch for more information to come home soon.

    August 20, 2018

This week begins our three week unit on bears. We will be focusing on three different bear stories: Brown Bear, Brown  Bear, What Do You See?, The Three Bears, and Corduroy. During this first week we will be wearing a different color to school each day to celebrate colors. Students will also be bringing in a small disposable colored item to match the color of the day. We will use these items to make color posters for our rooms. Please help your child wear the following colors on the following days.

    Monday - yellow

    Tuesday - red

    Wednesday - blue

    Thursday - green

    Friday - purple

Our first early release day is this Friday, August 24th. Students dismiss at 12:05. Please make arrangements for your child's pick-up. We will go to lunch on early release days. Please plan on your child having lunch as usual. If you prefer that your child eats after school, please send them with a snack to eat during lunch time.

During the year kindergarten will be working on a phonics program on classroom iPads on a daily basis. In order for all the students to be able to use the iPads simultaneously and to promote a healthy environment, we are asking that each student have their own over the head ear phones. These will be kept in their cubbies and returned at the end of the year. Please send in headphones in a large gallon ziploc bag labeled with their name on it by the end of August.

Our students will be creating book boxes to store the books that we make at our publishing center.  Each child will need to bring in a large cereal box to use as their book box. Please send these in by the end of August.

    August 12, 2018

We are off to a great start! We are all getting to know each other and the students are learning the routines and procedures of kindergarten. Please remember to check your child's homework folder nightly and sign your initials to acknowledge that you have seen their clip color for the day and that they have completed their homework. Remember homework does not need to be returned unless specifically asked for. Also, please continue to send their transportation tags back for this week to be sure we have all learned where everyone should be at the end of the day. If you have a change in end of the day transportation, it must be in writing. Finally, if you have not returned all of the beginning of the year paperwork that was sent home that first day, please do so ASAP. Thank you!

    August 6, 2018

We are so excited for our first day with our students tomorrow. Remember that campus opens at 8:30 and the students will come directly to the classrooms tomorrow morning only. After tomorrow, parents will drop their students off at the gate and they will walk to the classrooms to unpack and then go to the playground (don't worry, we will help them). Please be sure that your child has a lunch from home or lunch money. Finally, make sure that your child's teacher knows how your child is getting home from school and that you have make a transportation tag. Remember to send the tags back to school everyday for two weeks so that we can all become familiar with end of the day routines. Look for your child to bring home a school communication folder tomorrow. Inside you will find several forms that require your signature. See everyone tomorrow morning!
