STUDENT OF THE WEEK
I will be starting a Student of the Week unit in our class beginning August 13th. The activities in this unit will serve to make each child feel special and develop oral language skills. In addition, every student will be appreciated at the end of his/her week.
I greatly appreciate your help with this unit. Each student will be assigned one week during the year. A suggested list of daily activities follows:
MONDAY - This day will be for sharing background
information. Your child will be given an autobiography
which will be displayed on our Student of the
Week bulletin board. Students may also put up any
pictures, interesting facts or other posters on
the board. ALL items need to be prepared before
Monday so the student can quickly attach them to
the board. 5-10 minutes will be set aside for the
Student of the Week to explain everything.
TUESDAY - The Student of the Week will display
collections or hobby items. A few minutes will be
set aside for explaining and any questions.
WEDNESDAY - The Student of the Week will briefly
discuss a favorite time or experience in his/her
past. This might be a vacation, a sports event, etc.
Brochures or souvenirs may be shared during the
THURSDAY - All children are talented in or have
knowledge about something. Students will share
this with the class by doing a 5-10 minute
demonstration for the class. Examples might be:
recite a poem, tell a story, read a short book,
play an instrument, dance, do a skit, or demonstrate
making a craft.
FRIDAY - After a week of sharing, the Student of the
Week deserves a rest. He or she can relax while the
other students write a thank you letter. Your child
may bring in a treat to share.
I hope this will be a fun activity for you to work on with your child. These experiences will improve self-esteem and increase awareness of and appreciation for other people’s interests. It will also serve to improve planning, organizing, and speaking skills.
Your child will be told the prior week that he/she will be up for next week’s Student of the Week, S.O.T.W.
