• Mrs. Rodi’s Class Rm.504
Just a quick reminder of our 2017-2018 weekly specials schedule:
Wednesdays-PE (Don't forget your tennis shoes!)
    Thursdays- Art
HOMEWORK:   Don't forget, our newsletter/and words their way lists will always go home on Mondays. Students will be assessed on Fridays on these words and the high frequency words listed on the newsletter. If for some reason  your child did not bring their list home, please email me, and I will get them one. Also, students are  required to read for 20  minutes a night and document that on their Reading Calendar in their folder (these will come home starting the second week of school). Furthermore, please make sure to check your child's behavior calendar each night to see how they are doing. If you notice that they have not been filling in their calendar, please send me an email and I will make sure they are  doing so.
Drop off/Pick up:  Please remember that students are NOT permitted in the building until 8:40am, unless they are  accompanied by a parent who has signed in at the front office. There is a teacher on duty starting at 8:30am and lasting until 3:45pm. Please make sure that you  do not drop your child off before 8:30am, and that they have been picked up by 3:45pm. During the first couple of weeks, I will be standing with the kids by the blue gate near the flag pole at 3:30pm until they find where they need  to go.

Scholastic Orders:  If you would like to order scholastic books online, go to scholastic.com/readingclub. Our class activation code is: J6RJ9. Or, you can send your check in to me tomorrow. Our next book order will be at the end of this month.

RAZ-KIDS:  Raz-kids has now changed to Kids a-z.com.   https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login  I will be updating my new class roster and my teacher username is lgrodi and their password is hls.  If your child went to HLS for Kindergarten, I transferred your child's account from their previous teachers. New students have a brand new account, too! Every student will now have a password to enter when they click on their name. The password is hls.  This is just to ensure that no one goes on another child's account and uses their rewards (I had a few do that last year so I just want to make sure it doesn't happen again). I will send home explanation letters today, that will include their password for your reference. I also have cards here at school to help the kids who do not yet know their number by heart. Since reading for 20 minutes is our only required homework this year, Raz-Kids will be a great tool!

Homework:  Please remember that there is no formal homework in 1st grade except to READ for at  least 20 minutes every night, document that reading on their log and study the spelling words/high frequency words that will come home on Mondays. This will start the second week of school, but parents will have homework the first night!
-Our lunch is early this year, so we will have snack time from 10:15 to 10:30am everyday.  Snacks need to be small, healthy (no candy) and individual snacks only.  I will not be able to provide snacks to children who forget.  Please send your child's snack in a sealed bag daily. We cannot have any snacks left in desks or we may invite unwanted guests (bugs) into our classroom.  Also, we do have a student with an allergy to NUTS. So, please refrain from sending in snacks with these items. I cannot refrigerate items,  so please send them with an ice pack in their lunch box if this is necessary.

-Please let me know if your child would like to bring in a snack for their birthday.  As of now, we have 25 students in our class.  We will usually celebrate birthdays in the afternoon during snack time. Please make every effort to ensure that the snacks you bring in to share with the class are GLUTEN FREE. (or let me know and I will make sure that our nut free kids are offered a different snack).  All food brought in must be store bought/pre-packaged.  No homemade items are allowed per district policy.  Thank you!!
I have a list of books that you and your child can check out in the library that will align with their DRA reading level! I have attached 4 lists that go from level 1 DRA up to 3rd grade level reading.  I hope these help.  We will discuss DRA levels at conferences, or you can always call, email, or talk to me about your child's level.
