Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Julie Sprague
I have been teaching young adolescents for 35 years in four different states (MN, MI, and IL) in all core subject areas, bible, art, drama, and music. I designed curriculum for young adult author, Roland Smith, check out the website www.rolandsmith.com and other publishers of young adolescent literature. I just finished a 15 year associate teaching position with Walden University in their Middle Level Masters Program. I have a B.A. in Elementary Education and a M.S. degree from Central Michigan University in Middle Grades Education.
I love teaching 7th grade students English Language Arts on a highly effective, integrated team. I love my team!! I also the NJHS Coordinator and am the Teacher-Leader of The Power of One, a service learning club. In the last six years, students have created over 2500 Pillowcase Dresses for little girls in India, Africa, and Haiti :0
I love gardening (even in AZ) and working in all areas of theatre. I am highly involved in many church activities and work in the CCV bookstore on Sunday mornings.
My husband, Gary, is the Curriculum Manager and Music Professor for Grand Canyon University, and we both enjoy our Maltese dog, Tympani and any type of theatre. Our daughter Sarah, 38, works in finance and our son John Benjamini, 32, works for Fast Enterprises in Montgomery, Alabama and is celebrating eight years of marriage to Brittany, a stay-at-home-mom. I am also a granmama!! I have a six-year old granddaughter that already loves to read, and sing and is a drama queen. Her name is Eowyn pronounced A-O-Wyn. She is named after the warrior princess in Lord of the Rings Trilogy. We also have a grandson, John Elias (fifth generation John___________) three and a half years old! And another grandson, Rowan Benjamin one year old. We are very thankful for Skype. We have a little Maltese furball that treats us like rock stars. I love dogs (and yes, pigs for those of you who know me already).
Almost my entire family have been or are currently educators. I come from a very long line of educators. My mom and aunt are here in AZ and enjoy coming to help with the Pillowcase Project and helping me talk out my instruction.
My favorite memory as a teacher: The day three eighth grade boys went to the principal because they wanted 20 more minutes of English class. As a student: The day of the mock trial when I was the defense attorney and won the case!! We later found out that the defendant was guilty. :)
Just one more: A senior drama student who I had for English in both 7th and 8th grade wrote this sentiment after the year's fall musical, "Mrs. Sprague, I love you, because you don't just teach about English or theatre, you teach about life." I am so very proud to share with you that she is a Middle School Teacher in D.C.
