•  WELCOME TO THE HEALTH CENTER!

    Nurse:  Jamie Miller, RN, BSN

The mission of the School Nurse is to ensure that students learn and practice healthy habits to advance their well being, academic success, and lifelong achievement.

Hi!  I am Jamie Miller the School Nurse at Legend Springs School in Glendale, AZ.  I consider it a privilege to serve the students, staff and parents at Legend Springs and encourage you to let me know any information that will help me provide the best care possible for your child.  The Health Center is located in the Administration Building next to the main office. During these ever changing and challenging times, please know that while we are not yet together on campus I am still available for students and their families.  Please feel free to email, call or make an appointment to meet with me as needs arise.
Important:  Please check out the Baked/Processed Birthday or Celebration Treats List (see Severe Allergy/Food Allergy page) before bringing treats to the classroom to be shared at school. https://snacksafely.com/safe-snack-Although we are prohibiting sharing birthday treats due to the necessity of limiting same day exchange of materials between students, we are allowing donations of pre-packaged food for snacks.  If you would like to donate snacks, please arrange for drop off with your student's teacher.  The teacher will then hold the snack for 4 days before distributing them to the students.  Thank you for your understanding.

COVID testing resources please visit the DVUSD website here or look under my COVID tab.
For any questions or concerns, please contact me at 623-376-4510 or 11.  You may also e-mail me at Jamie.Miller@dvusd.org .
Any messages or emails sent/left Monday through Friday by 3:00 PM will be return within 24 hours.  I can usually respond the same day but please know that I will get back to you within 24 hours. If a message/email is left after 3:00 PM on Friday, I will get back to you Monday morning.  On half days I am out of the office at 12:30 PM so emails and calls after this time will be returned the next day or if on a Friday, on Monday morning.

    Learning Goals:
    1.  Each student will recognize when to report illness and/or injury to the School Nurse to facilitate optimal treatment and recovery.

    2.  Each student will demonstrate effective germ-killing procedure when washing hands.
    3.  Each student will recoginze playground safety, knowing when it is safe to play outside and how to play safely on the playgrund.
The Health Office provides on-campus health screenings, assessment, and education as well as first-aid and nursing care for students and staff.  The Health Office is NOT A PRIMARY CARE FACILITY OR URGENT CARE.  By law, the nurse is not allowed to make a medical diagnosis or prescribe treatment.  This includes medications.  I cannot keep stock medications like tylenol, ibuprofen, benadryl, anti itch creams or cough drops.  You must provide all medications you want your child to have to me in the original containers and have a signed permission slip. When accidents or illness occur during school hours, basic first-aid and/or emergency care will be given according to AZ State Board of Nursing standards and practices.  The nurse may suggest further medical follow up in certain circumstances.  Further care and follow up is the responsibility of the parents.
Keeping our students safe when the weather is warm or the pollution is high is very important.  We have two programs in place that help do that.  The first is our heat advisory.  The nurse will check each day and when our temperatures
get warmer, she provides guidelines for students for safe play.  This may include having no recess.  The second program is the Air Quality Flag program.  Each day a flag will fly in our courtyard letting students know what color day we are
having.  We have four colors (green, yellow, orange and red) that let the children know how clean the air is and what changes they may meed to make to their day at recess and when playing outside.
    Kinsa Health App
Our school has a closed group on the  health app called Kinsa.  This means that this group is only for Legend Springs and will only conatin information about our school.   It is annonymous and personal information is not shared, even
within our group.  You can download it on your phone on iPhone or Android and join the "Legend Springs Elementary" Group.  Once you have done that you will have current and up to date information about what is going around here at
Legend Springs as well as guidelines and support.  You will be able to track fever, symptoms and medications for easier and faster diagnosis of illness.  You can also anonymously ask questions or share conerns.  This is where I post
    instant messages about health concerns.
        Hearing & Vision
Hearing and vision screenings are done on all students, including new (to district) students, and all students who receive services through the special education department.  Parents and teachers can request a screening for any student at any time when a concern arises.  Vision and hearing screening for Legend Springs students are done in the fall, usually within the first month of school.  These screenings are not a diagnosis but rather an indication that further screening and evaluation by your child's doctor is recommended.  Vision referral letters are sent home to notify parents if the students have difficulties with any portion of the screening.  Students who have difficulty with an initial hearing screening will be tested again in 30 days, and if still having problems, will be referred to an audiologist.  Parents will be notified with a referral letter.  We have a district audiologist that will see students at no cost.
Scoliosis screening is completed on all 5th and 6th graders, usually in the spring semester during PE classes.  A note and permission slip will be sent home to parents to notify when students will be screened.  Only return the permission slip if you do not want your child screened or if they are already under a doctor's care for this issue. This is an optional screening.
