Welcome to Sixth Grade,
We are excited about teaching your sixth graders this year. It is important that you monitor your child's progress via Canvas, Power Schools, teacher websites, and talking to your child. In the pages that follow, we hope to answer all of your questions about sixth grade. (When we return to in-person school, your child will switch classes and use Planners.)
Conferences will be held 1st and 3rd quarters.
Standards-Based Grading Practices:
Math and Reading
25% Quizzes (no retakes available)
5% Homework (Math and Reading worksheets): All homework will be assigned a due date and completion of the homework will account for a 5% of the grade. NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER ONE WEEK FROM THE DUE DATE.
Science and Social Studies
Chapter /Unit Tests will be worth 100 points. These tests may be re-taken, if necessary. Students will have to attend tutoring and complete the new work assigned by the teacher.
Worksheets, quizzes, projects, etc. will be worth less than 30 points each. (There will not be re-takes available for these small assignments.)
Recording Zeros: Our school will not be recording 0's for a missing assignment. Instead, we will record a 49% until the assignment is completed. Assignments that ACTUALLY earned less than 50% are put into the grade book as a 50% until the assignment has been retaken, if applicable.
Test Corrections: To demonstrate mastery of the standards, test corrections are encouraged and expected on assessments for scores less than 70%. Students will have to attend tutoring and complete the work assigned by the teacher.
Extra Credit: Extra credit and grading on a curve are not used; these practices are not an effective way to show mastery of standards.
A = 90-100% Proficient work on all content objectives and advanced work on some objectives.
B = 80-89% Proficient work on all content objectives.
C = 70-79% Proficient work on most content objectives, although not on all.
D = 60-69% Proficient work on at least ½ of the content objectives but missing
objectives and is at significant risk of failing.
F = 50-59% Proficient work on fewer than ½ of the content objectives and is failing.
F = 49% No attempt made, missing work.
PowerSchools: Your grades are updated weekly on PowerSchool. https://ps.dvusd.org
To save paper, we do not send home written progress reports. A student may print out his/her grades at school with teacher permission, if a computer is not available at home. Also, if your child loses the password, your child may retrieve it from the front office. Lastly, if you would like PowerSchool to automatically send you weekly progress reports, you may sign up directly in your account.
Distance Learning: Instruction/Classwork: Be respectful: keep your computer muted and camera on during our Zoom classes. Be on time. Please be attentive: cell phones should be put away; keep class a distraction-free environment; if possible, take bathroom and snack breaks in between classes; if able, find a quiet place where you can be alone away from house distractions. Participate actively. Treat everyone the way you want to be treated and have fun!
In-Class Procedures: Instruction/Classwork: Please listen carefully to your teacher to ensure your learning. Do not be a distraction to those around you. If you have a question concerning the topic of learning, raise your hand to ask the teacher. Please wait for the teacher to dismiss you from class. Do not pack up your backpack early. Every minute of class time is important!
Rest Rooms: All students will be required to sign in and out for bathroom breaks. This will also be marked on the Planner. Bathroom breaks do not count toward discipline or reward, it is only a procedure we follow to ensure your child's safety.
- I will treat you with respect, so you will know how to treat me.
- Feel free to do anything that doesn't cause a problem for anyone else.
- If you cause a problem, I will ask you to solve it.
- If you can't solve the problem, or choose not to, I will do something.
- What I do, will depend on the special person, and the special situation.
- If you feel something is unfair, whisper to me, “I'm not sure that's fair,” and we will talk.
If you choose to break a rule:
- 1st time: Verbal warning or eye contact
- 2nd time: Written warning in Planner. Parents must sign the Planner that night.
- 3rd time: Three written warnings in one week, will result in a Lunch or After-School Detention. (Not including bathroom write-ups.)
Cell Phones at School: When students are on campus, their cell phones must be powered off and in backpacks. Once the final bell rings at 3:30, students may turn on their cell phones. If you need to get a hold of your child, please leave a message with the front office. The front office notifies the teachers when necessary. If a student breaks this rule after a warning, the phone will be sent to the front office. Students will have to get their phone back after school. On subsequent offenses, parents must retrieve the phone from the front office.
