- Terramar Academy of the Arts
- Meet Mrs. Mathis
-
My name is Michelle Mathis and I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year!
I am a native of Arizona. I grew up in the Deer Valley School District, and went on to Arizona State University West. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a dual certification in both elementary and special education.
My husband and I have been married twenty-six years this year. We have two boys. Our oldest is 22 and our youngest is 19 years old. People told me when my kids were little not to blink. They had warned me. They said that time would fly by and they would be grown before I knew it. They were right. Where did the time go? It seems like yesterday they were roaming the halls of Terramar with me!I began teaching at Esperanza Elementary as a special education teacher. I came to Terramar seventeen years ago as a special education teacher, as well. I then transferred into 2nd grade the following year. I taught 2nd grade for nine years and absolutely loved it! I returned to special education for two years. I loved being able to focus on differentiating instruction and teaching strategies. I was also able to push-into my colleagues' classrooms during this time and learned so many new techniques and ideas. This experience had a huge impact on me and only fueled my desire to return to the general education classroom. This will be my fifth year as a 5th grade math teacher and my second year teaching science. I feel extremely blessed to be part of the Terramar family. I adore my team and I absolutely love 5th grade.
I love working with kids and strongly believe there is something about every child that just makes them shine. I am humbled and privileged to be able to discover their unique qualities throughout the year. I strive to make school a place where our students feel valued, capable and safe. Emphasis is placed on empathy, compassion, drive, motivation and accomplishment. My goal for every student is for each of them to be able to recognize their abilities and realize that there are no limits to what they can accomplish if they are willing to try and keep trying. They are truly my inspiration and the reason I love to come to work!I look forward to working closely with you this year to ensure your child's academic success. What an adventurous year this will be!
Sincerely,Mrs. Michelle Mathis
