My name is Michelle Mathis and I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year!
I am a native of Arizona. I grew-up in the Deer Valley School District, and went on to Arizona State University West. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a dual certification in both elementary and special education.
My husband and I have been married almost twenty-four years. We have two boys. Our oldest is beginning his second year in college and our youngest is off to high school. Where did the time go? It seems like yesterday they were roaming the halls of Terramar with me!
I began teaching at Esperanza Elementary as a special education teacher. I came to Terramar fourteen years ago as a special education teacher, as well. I then transferred into 2nd grade the following year. I taught 2nd grade for nine years and absolutely loved it! I returned to special education for two years. I loved being able to focus on differentiating instruction and teaching strategies. I was also able to push-into my collegues classrooms during this time and learned so many new techniques and ideas. This experience had a huge impact on me and only fueled my desire to return to the general education classroom. This will be my third year in 5th grade. I am excited to be teaching math, adore my team and love 5th grade. My goal for every student is for them to be able to recognize their talents, especially when they begin the year doubting their abilities. They are truly my inspiration!
I feel extremely blessed to be in this profession and a part of the team on this campus. I love working with kids and strongly believe there is something about every child that just makes them shine. I am humbled and priviledged to be able to discover their unique qualities during the year. I strive to make school a place where our students feel valued, capable and safe. Emphasis is placed on empathy, compassion, drive, motivation and accomplishment.
I'm looking forward to an exciting year!
Sincerely,Mrs. Michelle Mathis
