Just like the Gifted Q&A page, I am posting answers to questions that relate to our SAGE program. I hope these answers will be a good resource to everyone.

What is SAGE ELA Content Replacement?

    Program Philosophy

The SAGE program provides and assures numerous daily opportunities for collaborative learning among gifted students in their identified areas of English language arts. This academic area is taught at the correct level of difficulty so that students are appropriately challenged and excited about learning. SAGE provides an environment that encourages students to contribute as well as to respect each other’s thoughts and ideas, so that they may grow to show tolerance, thoughtfulness, kindness and acceptance, and become positive influences wherever they may be. An appreciation of individual contributions among SAGE students creates an atmosphere of acceptance.

SAGE is a content replacement program in English language arts in grades 3-6. Students attend SAGE classes in lieu of general education classes and receive grades in their content replacement subject(s) from their SAGE teacher. SAGE addresses accelerated curriculum and content that is enriched and differentiated. The SAGE program provides a minimum of one-year acceleration in English language arts while ensuring current grade level concepts are mastered. SAGE students use differentiated strategies appropriate for high ability/gifted learners.
Is SAGE ELA enrichment or acceleration?
Both. SAGE classes focus on enrichment (novels instead of textbooks etc.), but they typically function one-to-two grade levels above the standard grade level curriculum. The SAGE classroom provides for the small group and enrichment that gifted students need, but also accelerating them to prepare them for honors/advanced classes in middle school and high school.
How come other Deer Valley schools have SAGE Math and CS does not?
Typical SAGE Math classes focus on acceleration, with the one SAGE teacher teaching up to 8 different (short) class periods a day. Moving students to the next grade level (placing them with an other gifted trained teacher) allows the SAGE teacher to help more students at our school. Because of this scheduling, Mrs. McKinley is able to not only team teach/help in the gifted/accelerated math classes, but she also has the time to have Reading/ELA classes that run for more then 45 minutes a day and also help the gifted students and teachers in 1st & 2nd grade.
