Green Thumb
Club Green Thumb 2019 will conclude during the week of December 9, 2019. It has been a great season for growing! Our club members will harvest and make a salad on their last meeting day! The garden will continue to produce during the remainder of the school year! Members are welcome to ask Mrs. Thiebeau for the vegetables as they reach maturity. Look for broccoli and cauliflower in January!
This year, students geminated seeds for the garden and for planters they took home. Succulents were planted in repurposed water bottles. Cuttings from plants were re-rooted and planted to create additional plants from one starter plant. Our solar powered hydroponic tower garden was moved and is taking off. Look for spinach, lettuce, and kale in January and February!
A DonorsChoose project was created by the students to protect the garden from winter frost. Even in the Valley of the Sun this is a recurring problem! From Egg to Chick
Egg to Chick made its return in March of 2018! The club hatched 16 chicks, 7 ducklings, and 6 turkeys! After further investigation, we decided not to add a permannent chicken coop to the Sierra Verde Campus. The work involved with raising mature chickens is a bit more than we can take on right now.
A larger temporary coop was built by one the club's student helpers and was used in place of the smaller cages that previously housed the chicks during their stay at our school. The chicks enjoyed the larger area!
