Let me introduce myself! My name is Dr. Kunz. I'm extremely excited to return to Sunset Ridge this coming school year. Here is a little about myself. I moved to Arizona from Cincinnati, Ohio back in 2006. I have been involved with music since elementary school, participating in band, choir, marching band, orchestras, and private oboe and piano lessons. My degrees include: a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from University of South Carolina, a Master of Music degree in Oboe Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Oboe Performance from Arizona State University.
I was a featured performer at the Midwest Clinic in 2006 with the Lakota West High School Symphonic Winds, of which I am an alum. I also was a featured soloist with the Southwestern Ohio Symphonic Band in 2006 and the Tempe Symphonic Wind Ensemble in 2011. In 2008, I moved to Great Falls, Montana and was the Interim Principal Oboe with the Great Falls Symphony Orchestra and Chinook Winds Quintet, as well as Associate Principal Oboe of the Helena Symphony in Helena, Montana. In February 2015 I was clinician for the 2014-2015 DVUSD 6th Grade Honor Band (blue region). I have been in the Deer Valley Unified School District since 2010. I also have a constantly growing private oboe studio, made up of students from across our district! I was chosen to be the 6th grade All-State Band Clinician for 2019, which was truly an honor.
Outside of the classroom, I am quite the animal lover. Currently I have 4 dogs and a bird (Mexican Redheaded Amazon)! My three mini-dachshunds are constant entertainment and company! One of our dachshunds is paralyzed, but he carries on like nothing is wrong. Our beagle is quite the handful, but loves walks and sleeping on the couch. I love traveling, though I'll admit a small fear of flying. I have traveled to Spain, Bora Bora (French Polynesia), Cabo San Lucas (Mexico), Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Turks and Caicos, Cancun (Mexico), Bahamas, and all over the US (all but 12 states!!). I began golfing in October 2018 and LOVE it! Most Sundays I can be found on the course. I can be seen every morning with my coffee, as it is one of my favorite things. The kids always ask my favorites, so here are some of my favorite things (in no particular order): peppermint bark, carmel/chocolate/peanut butter sweets, Cadbury Mini Eggs (sadly only at Easter), iced tea, coffee, Cincinnati Bengals (Who Dey!), dachshunds, penguins, turtles, blue, and I'm sure more! I am gluten free, but am thankful that so many restaurants can accommodate a food allergy! That kind of sums it all up! =)
This is now my 8th year at Sunset Ridge and 11th year of teaching, all in DVUSD. Our band program is truly amazing. Sunset Ridge boasts one of the most successful elementary and junior high band programs in our Deer Valley District. Our students have traveled to the MIM, Organ Stop Pizza, received scholarships to DVUSD Music Rocks Camp, and participated in Music in the Parks and Recording Studio Workshops at Disneyland. The band students in our top performing ensemble, Hawk Band, were the second highest rated program in the 2016-2017 school year, receiving the highest rating possible, Superior with Distinction, at our District Performance Assessments. These students work hard, as evidenced by their performances. I am so proud of each of them! Our 2016-2017 Hawk Band was awarded a consistency award for their Superior with Distinction results. They also helped our program earn a $5000 grant from Albertson's during the same school year.
