Other than my professional life, I have been married to Jay Kopas since 1987, and we have four (4) adult sons, who have all graduated from Deer Valley USD schools; three of them have degrees from ASU, and one from Baylor University. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, traveling, and hiking.
Degrees and Certifications:
After graduating from the University of Northern Colorado with a BA in Spanish and Deaf Education and a MA in Deaf Education, I began my career in education at the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf teaching elementary school for two years and high school Spanish and Social Studies for two years. In 1989, I moved to California to the California School for the Deaf, Riverside to teach middle school Social Studies for four years. I then became a Curriculum Resource Specialist for two and a half years. Upon returning 'home' to Phoenix in 1995, I again worked at the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf teaching elementary school for a half year and then moving into the library for three years.
I made the move to public school in 1999 when I became the Library Media Specialist at the two middle schools in Cave Creek. In August 2002 I was finally able to start working in the Deer Valley USD, when I got a job in the Library Media Center at Bellair Elementary. I worked there for three years and then transferred to Anthem School to work in the community where I have lived since November of 1999. In the fall of 2009, I became the Library Clerk Supervisor for the K-6, K-8, and Middle School Library Clerks. In 2015, I became the IB MYP Librarian at Paseo Hills School and continued working with all the Library Clerks and Teacher Librarians in the district as the District Librarian. In the fall of 2017, the IB MYP program was moved to Norterra Canyon, making me the Teacher Librarian at Norterra Canyon, and continuing as District Librarian.
