• Beginning Band (Grade 5)

Everything you need to know about the Norterra Canyon Beginning Band Program, grading and attendance policies, required books and materials are contained in the Band Handbook document below. You will receive a copy of this document on your first day of school. The Contract page needs to be signed and returned, (please be sure to provide your email and phone contact information).  The Handbook also contains a Band Polo Shirt order form. Use the links below to download digital copies or to print additional copies if needed. Please note that we will be using the Tradition Of Excellence Book 1 in addition to sheet music that I will provide this year.  You can purchase this at a local music store, or during Band Rental Night from 5-7 p.m. in the Band Room on August 8th or August 15th. Reputable local music vendors will have rental instruments, books and supplies at the two Rental Nights.  You can drop in anytime between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.
At the Beginning Level - Grade 5 - Students will begin instruction on a band instrument of their choice, with input from the Director based upon results of the 4th Grade Exploratory Pre-Band classes. Students will demonstrate proper care of the instrument, and will be familiar with the technology of the instrument. They will demonstrate basic positions, tone production, and fingerings, and will count, read and perform beginning-level band music being studied (ABODA Solo Repertoire Level 1). Instruction will be delivered in either homogeneous or heterogeneous class settings, with limited ensemble work (see the Band Schedule below to determine which days of the week your child has Band class). It is expected that students learning a new instrument at the beginning of fifth grade should master Traditions of Excellence Book 1 by the end of their 1st year of playing.
