Degrees and Certifications:
Hello, my name is Mrs. Burtis, and I am going to be your first grade teacher. This is going to be an exciting year filled with learning and new adventures. This will be my fourth year teaching 1st grade at Highland Lakes, but this will be my eighteenth year teaching. I have taught special education for twelve years and 1st grade for two years in the Pendergast District. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and Elementary Education. I also hold a Master’s degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in English as a second language and reading instruction.
I was born and raised in Glendale, AZ. I have been married for 20 years and have 2 daughters and 1 son. My oldest daughter Jennifer is 17 and keeps me busy playing club soccer all year and scaring me to death now that she is driving. Samantha is my 13 year old who loves gymnastics and does flips all over my house. My youngest, Garrison, will turn 10 this summer. He absolutely loves sports and thinks the whole family should too! I have 1 German Shepherd named Laina, and a Freench Bulldog named Lola. My house is a very busy place and I enjoy every minute of it.
I am so excited to be your teacher this year. I am looking forward to an exciting year of learning, exploring and fun in room 504.
