Mr. Patrick Yennie

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you as the as the Interim Principal of DVMS for the 2016-2017 school year.

My personal background includes being married for 39 years and being blessed with two wonderful daughters, one of whom is a teacher in Deer Valley – the other, a working professional who would love nothing morethan to be a teacher herself! My wife, MaryBeth and I have 5 wonderful grandchildren (3 boys and 2 girls)! I am also a Navy Veteran who served in Viet Nam from 1969-1970 as a Hospital Corpsman. I hold an undergraduate degree in Zoology with a minor in Chemistry and a Master’s degree in Secondary Education from Arizona State University (Go Sun Devils!).

During my Junior and Senior years at ASU, I had the good fortune of being hired to work for Jacques Cousteau who, during WWII, invented the Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) that divers use to explore the depths of the oceans around the world! Working with the Cousteau family on their Project Ocean Search summer camps for students from across the United Sates and sailing up and down the California coast in a three-masted schooner, immediately changed my career path from pre-med to wanting to continue working with middle and high school age students in all fields of science – especially in the field of Oceanography! I wanted to be a teacher – and I’ve never regretted any of my 30 years of being a teacher or school administrator!

My teaching and administrative experiences include having worked in: Madison Elementary; Washington Elementary; Kyrene Elementary and Deer Valley Unified School District, where I retired in June of 2012.

My retirement plan was to spend more time with my growing crew of grandchildren (Note the Navy Term) and to use my Hospital Corpsman skills to volunteer at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital – which I did – and, which I was enjoying tremendously (e.g. – counseling with Veterans and assisting them with an on-line tool for communicating with their primary VA Health Care Team – including, therapists, nurses and their doctor).

However, about 6 months into my volunteering, I was asked if I would return to DVUSD to serve as interim principal for a K-6 School due to that principal being reassigned to a different role at the district office level. Of course, I said, ‘yes’ and the experience of coming into schools across the district has continued to be both professionally and personally fulfilling.

What’s really exciting for me in this new venture, is that DVMS was the first administrative assignment I had 34 years ago, in 1982, as Assistant Principal. My professional world has come full circle!

Thank you for allowing me this opportunity! And, please feel free to introduce yourself to me during my stay as we may have stories we can share about people we might mutually know and/or places we’ve been.

Have a wonderful year!
