    Hungry Caterpillar   plants

Last week, we learned how to brainstorm about a topic and then organize our ideas and write three complete sentences.

We enjoyed our first library visit where we were allowed to check out from the beginning chapter book section for the first time!

We will begin our plant unit in science this week!  We will plant some seeds and learn about the things that plants need in order to grow.

Our first book order was placed on Friday.  We should receive the books in about a week.

We will have another 90 min. early release on Friday.

English Language Arts

  • Tip and Tam

    This week in Language Arts...

The week we will read the realistic fiction story "Tip and Tam."  Our comprehension focus will be on plot.  Our sight words for this week are do, yellow, look, you and was.  In phonics, we will focus on 2-letter consonant blends, such as st, fl, tr, etc.  In writing, we will continue to work on observational writing.  This week, we will add pronouns and combined sentences.  For example: instead of "Freddy is brown," our sentences will become, "He is brown and soft."

In this farm-themed game, students will choose an ending to go with a consonant blend to make a word... Fuzz Bug Farm

In this game, students will choose the correct consonant blend to go with an ending to create a word to match a picture... bl, pl, gl sounds game

This video teaches students about consonant blends... Jack Hartmann - Blends

Here is another video that helps students read words with blends... Learn to Blend

Math

  •  Counting On

This week in math, we will work heavily on problem solving.  One type of problem solving that we will be working on, which can be challenging for first graders, is "add to with change unknown" problems.  For example... "2 birds were on a branch.  Some more birds came.  Now there are 7 birds on the branch.  How many more birds came to the branch?"

We will also practice counting on.  This is a helpful strategy for students.  For example... if students are adding 6+3, we want them to count "siiiiixxxx, seven, eight, nine," instead of starting from one.

     .

In this game, students will click on pictures that show one more and one less than a number... One More/One Less

Here is a game in which students can match 2 numbers that equal ten... Kitten Match

In this game, students will match pictures with addition number sentences... Addition Up to 10

This activity will help students practice their counting up to 120... Count Objects up to 120
