Mrs. Katie Wahlstrom

Welcome to Terramar's Developmental Preschool! My name is Katie Wahlstrom and I am one of the classroom teachers. This will be my fourteenth year of classroom teaching. I have always known I was going to be a teacher, the first day of kindergarten I came home and told my mom I would be a teacher. As I grew up I had a growing interest in special education. I received my Bachelors in Special Education from ASU before beginning my teaching career. I am a Highly Qualified Certified Teacher in Early Childhood Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Special Education K-12, and Elementary Education 1-8. My first 3 years were spent teaching a self-contained emotional disabilities and behavioral disorder classroom. I loved it! The kids were great and I miss it very much. When my husband and I moved across town from Maricopa to Surprise I was lucky enough to start teaching Developmental Preschool for Deer Valley. My first two years were at O'Connor High School until my classroom relocated to a larger room at Terramar. Terramar is a great school and I enjoy being a part of the team here! I was one of recipients of Teacher of the Year for Deer Valley Unified School District for the 2014-2015 school year. Before I was a classroom teacher I did in home Hibilitation Therapy for children with Autism, and before that I worked at a preschool/private school for children with social and emotional disabilities. Working with children with special needs has been such a pleasure.

I have 4 children at home who I miss when I am working. My son, Zane, turned 9 over the summer. He also attends Fourth Grade at Terramar. My daughter, Addilyn, is 7! She attends Second Grade at Terramar. My daughter,  Tinsley will be 5 in September! My youngest daughter, Everlee turned 3 in July. They have grown up so fast and time has gone very quickly! I enjoyed spending my days with them over the summer. My husband, Shaun, and I have enjoyed 11 years of marriage and look forward to many many more! I enjoy cooking dinner, but also enjoy going out to eat. Our favorite spots are Chick fil a, Culvers, Chipotle and Olive Garden. I am trying to only drink water and I do not drink coffee, Pepsi is my coffee! I enjoy chocolate candy and try not to buy it otherwise it is gone way too quickly. Most of all I enjoy spending time with my family, volunteering with my church and teaching your children. Thank you for entrusting me with your precious little one! I look forward to another wonderful year with you and your child!

Welcome to Ms. Katie's Class!

This is my 5th year here at Terramar School and in the Deer Valley Unified School District. This is also my 11th year teaching, all of which have been in Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten!!! I am originally from Wisconsin (yes, I am a Cheesehead!) and attended the University of Minnesota Duluth. I graduated in 2006 with my B.A.S. in Early Childhood Studies. I am currently licensed to teach early childhood education and early childhood special education in both Minnesota and Arizona. After graduating from UMD, I came to Arizona for the sun and the heat and taught in Surprise in the Dysart Unified School District for 1 year. During my first year of teaching I had the 'itch' to teach internationally. I had completed part of my university student teaching requirement in San Jose, Costa Rica and I absolutely loved it! I decided to follow my dream to teach internationally and was hired to teach Pre-Kindergarten at the American School of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I taught Pre-K at ASPV for 3 years. When I decided to return to the States, I was hired in the Glendale Elementary School District where I taught in their early childhood special education program for 2 years. In 2013, I accepted a job as the early childhood special education teacher here at Terramar and have loved it!

On my free time, I enjoy watching sports (Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, and Milwaukee Brewers! I am still a Wisconsin girl), spending time with friends and family, going to movies, and walking my dog Hope. Hope is a purebred Mexican Street Dog. I like to say that she is my favorite souvenir from my time in Mexico as she was a homeless street dog that my friend and I rescued. I also have 2 adorable nephews (4 year-old Cooper and 2 year-old Colton) and 1 beautiful Niece (1 year-old Piper) who live in Wisconsin, and I try to get back home as much as possible to see them!

I look forward to working with you and your children. I LOVE preschool and I know that this is going to be a GREAT year!!
