Curriculum - What are we using to learn?

We will not be using a Science book this year.  The majority of our learning will be thorough hands on experiments and the recording of data.  We will be using the FOSS kits supplied by the district. The kits we will be using this year are: Landforms, Magnets/ Electricity, and Environments.  As well as the FOSS kits, we will be learning about the Scientific Method, Characteristics of Organisms, and Adaptations in plants and Animals, Weather and lastly we will identify individuals who have contributed to scientific knowledge.  The following is a list of the concepts we will be covering and the timeline in which we will be covering them.

Unit 1: The Scientific Method and Landforms (1st Quarter)

    Strand 1: Inquiry Process

Concept 1:  Observations, Questions and Hypotheses

Concept 2:  Scientific Testing (Investigating and Modeling

    Concept 3:  Analysis and Conclusion

    Concept 4:  Communication

Strand 6:  Earth and Space Science

Concept 2:  Earth's Processes and Systems

Concept 3:  Changes in the Earth and Sky

Unit 2: Landforms and Environments (2nd Quarter)

Strand 2:  History and Nature of Science

Concept 1:  History of Science as a Human Endeavor

Concept 2:  Nature of Scientific Knowledge

    Assessments/Quizzes/Tests:

Students complete pre and post assessments for each unit. The pre assessment is not for a grade it is just a reference for the students to see how much they grew between their pre and post-test. We use quizzes to see how my students are doing along the way. If students receive below a B on any quiz or assignment, they may make up half of the points they missed by making corrections at home.  All unit tests will be open note/open book tests.  If students receive below a C on a test, they may retake it. Once the test is retake, the higher of the two grades will be recorded.

    Homework:

Students will not have homework in Science every night.

    Science Projects:

All 4th grade students are required to present a science project for STEM night in May.  Students will receive a packet of information and requirements.

    Grades:

We will be using the following grading scale for Science this year. It is very important that you and your child log in to Power Schools at least once a week to check on their progress.

The grade scale used in 4th grade is:

    90%-100%A

    80%-89% B

    70%-79% C

    60%-69% D

    Below 59% F
