DVEF BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
A Message from the Executive Director of the DVEF (Deer Valley Education Foundation) regarding Battle of the books.Hello All!In light of the sad news today about schools not re-opening this school year, the DVEF Board has decided to cancel the District Battle of the Books. We tried to come up with different solutions so we would be able to celebrate your students, but we couldn't come up with a feasible way to honor them. We are especially sad for the 6th graders who cannot take part next year. The Regional Battle has also been canceled.
Our overall winning team: VSCO Girls!! Sunny Fife, Brooke Morrow, and Daisy Sierra. We are so very proud of you girls and ALL the students who competed this year. You should all be very proud of yourselves!
Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for students in fifth and sixth grade. Students read books and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The competitions are a lively academic competition. Battle of the Books improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, and teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship.
Fifth and sixth grade students will be teamed in groups of two or three to compete and test their knowledge in three exciting school competitions during the 2020-2021 school year. Winning teams will move on to district and inter-district-wide competitions.
Team members are assigned 4 different books to read for each competition. The highest scoring team from each school will represent their classmates at the district finale in April 2021. The top teams that win at the district level will go on to compete in a battle with Chandler, Gilbert, Higley, Mesa, and Queen Creek/Combs Districts in May 2021.
The Deer Valley Education Foundation (DVEF) has formed a committee of retired teachers, business partners, and avid readers to facilitate and run the Battles at each school. Committee members are independent community members. DVEF will supply books to our library, certificates and awards for the participants, and do all the legwork.
***Please Note: All Battle dates are tentative and subject to change due to unforseen conflicts.
