DVEF BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for students in fifth and sixth grade. Students read books and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The competitions are a lively academic competition. Battle of the Books improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, and teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship.
Fifth and sixth grade students will be teamed in groups of two or three to compete and test their knowledge in three exciting school competitions during the 2019-2020 school year. Winning teams will move on to district and inter-district-wide competitions.
Team members are assigned 4 different books to read for each competition. The highest scoring team from each school will represent their classmates at the district finale in April. The top teams that win at the district level will go on to compete in a battle with Chandler, Gilbert, Higley, Mesa, and Queen Creek/Combs Districts in May.
The Deer Valley Education Foundation (DVEF) has formed a committee of retired teachers, business partners, and avid readers to facilitate and run the Battles at each school. Committee members are independent community members. DVEF will supply books to our library, certificates and awards for the participants, and do all the legwork.
***Please Note: All Battle dates are tentative and subject to change due to unforseen conflicts.
