Mrs. McCormick

Hello and welcome to First Grade!

I hope you enjoyed a wonderful summer break with your family. I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about myself and express how excited I am to be joining the wonderful staff at Highland Lakes this year!

My name is Trish McCormick and my family recently relocated here to Phoenix from Modesto, CA due to a job transfer for my husband, who works for Pepsi. I feel especially lucky because my side of the family lives here and I am enjoying spending more time with them. This is our first full summer in the desert and it’s been a hot one!

We have two sons, Austin and Mason. Austin is 26 and still lives in CA where he is a service coordinator for children with special needs and teaches classes at his church’s school of ministry. Mason is 22 and came to school here at Grand Canyon University three years ago. He graduated in April with a degree in Biblical Studies, went to Asia with GCU over the summer and is now working with the Diamondbacks.

We are huge dog lovers! Daisy Mae Puddin’ Tater (the kids chose her name) is an 11 year old Llhasa Apso and Winston (Winnie) is a wild West Highland terrier mix that we rescued and believe is about 9. We also are big baseball fans and love our San Francisco Giants! We took full advantage of spring training here and attended as many games as we could, which also helped us get to know our new hometown and surrounding area better. We also enjoy antique stores and being outdoors. There’s so much to do here! We tried something new and all rode Segways in the desert and it was awesome!

This will be my 20thyear in education. I have many years of experience teaching kindergarten, first grade, reading intervention and most recently was an English Language Development/Literacy Specialist, spending my time working with small groups of English Language learners and children needing extra support with reading and writing in grades K-5.

I am looking forward to working with your first grader and making this a year of growth and achievement! In addition to academics, I will also be spending a good deal of time on social skills, kindness, compassion and developing independence.

Please feel free to come meet with me anytime you have a question or concern. It is so important that we work together as a team to help your child make the most of this year. I enjoy getting to know families and hope that you will feel welcome in the classroom and a valued part of your child’s education. I encourage you to consider volunteering in the classroom as well as becoming involved in the PTSO. My goal is to build strong, positive relationships with you as well as your child!
