English Language Arts classes uniquely develop skills that apply to all content areas and contribute to student advancement in future educational and employment opportunities. Sometimes students find the subject of language arts disingenuous and irrelevant. Guiding students towards an in-depth appreciation and understanding requires thinking within the broader context of life. The importance of learning to think is one of the greatest strengths of a language arts class. As an eighth grade teacher, I enjoy the quirkiness and awkwardness of the age and find that students always surprise me with new insights adding to my own personal growth. I appreciate the difficulty of students in limbo between holding on to elementary school memories and the anxiety and excitement of becoming a young adult. As parents of eighth grade students, you are particularly aware of the vulnerability of your students to the pressures and expectations of success and the need to meld personal responsibility and academic growth without losing the exuberance and curiosity of youth. For many parents and students, eighth grade is the pinnacle year in an experience that spans the breadth of childhood pitting a melancholy feeling for the past against the hopes and high expectations for the future. I think that perhaps J.M Barrie, the author of “Peter Pan,” explains it best when Peter says, “To live will be an awfully big adventure.” I am looking forward to our shared adventure this year.
