• The 40 Book Challenge

The goal of the 40 Book Challenge for intermediate readers is to get students to leave their reading comfort zone and explore new reading genres. I would love to see my students’ love of reading flourish, as well as for students to make significant academic gains in reading comprehension. The best way to become a better reader is to read voraciously and the 40 Book Challenge helps with this!

I know 40 books sound like a lot, but students will only have to average about 1 book a school week. This can be accomplished by reading during our daily independent reading time at school and by spending at least 30 minutes reading nightly at home. They can always use holidays to move ahead or get caught up. Students will have the opportunity to visit the school library once a month where the librarian and myself will assist the students in choosing appropriately leveled books and genres to complete the 40 Book Challenge. My classroom library is filled with a variety of choices that students can check out as well.

Some books, like shorter non-fiction books, can possibly be read in a day or two. Most books will obviously take longer to finish. By making the right book choices, I am confident all students will be able to achieve the goal of reading 40 “just right” books for them. The books students will choose to read for the “40 Book Challenge” will include the books they will be reading in class. That will take care of at least 4 books for the challenge. We will have a donut party to celebrate our class progress each quarter.  At the end of the 1st quarter we will celebrate students that have completed 10 books, 2nd quarter will honor those that have read 20 books, 3rd quarter 30 books and students that complete all 40 books will be invited to a movie at the end of the school year.

Parents will be monitoring (as will I) student progress by checking the student’s reading log weekly, or hopefully daily. Students will be keeping track of the books they read by completing the following steps below. Now, get ready, get set, and READ!

Steps to the 40 Book Challenge

    1. The student will choose a book genre off of their “Reading Log for the 40 Book Challenge” kept in their writing binder and write the title of the book, the author, and the start date.
    2. The student will independently read daily in school for 10-15 minutes and 30 minutes or more at home nightly so to reach the goal of 40 books or more!
    3. When the student successfully finishes a book the student must record the end date in their “Reading Log for the 40 Book Challenge” found in their writing binder and graph their progress.
    4. Before moving on to your next book, get a sticky note and record the book name and put it on the bulletin board to record your progress.

I understand that reading is an integral part of my 7th grade academic year.  I will set goals with Mrs. Bruhn and work to incorporate reading into my everyday life.  I will ask if I need guidance and I will discuss my progress with my parent weekly.        ________________________________   _______________________________
