• Penguin Homework

Homework should not last more than 30 minutes per night.

My homework is designed to be an interactive and positive time for you and your child, and to begin building a foundation for good study habits.  These assignments should not take a long time or be frustrating for either of you.  If it becomes so, please discontinue the activity and send me a note.  Please feel free to enrich or remediate the activities to accommodate your child’s ability level.  The most important part of our nightly homework is time spent reading books together.  These can be books that you read TO your child, books that you read WITH your child, or books that your child reads TO YOU.  All three are of equal importance for any child at any level.  Your child should be reading for 20 minutes daily in order to become a more fluent reader.  R.E.D. Reading Folders and Weekly Homework packets will begin a few weeks after school begins.

    Weekly Homework Expectations:

    • Homework should be turned in on Fridays after you have corrected it and gone over errors with your child. New packets come home each Monday.
    • R.E.D. Reading Folder Log should be filled out and signed by parents for 20 minutes of daily reading. Books will be sent home in this folder and need to be returned to school every day as we will be using them in class. The completed log will be collected and a new log sent home as needed. Our 2nd grade sight word list will be included in this folder with your child’s progress for practicing. Instant recognition of all words, without sounding out, is our end of year goal.
    • Raz-Kids should be a part of your child’s reading, if possible. This website has books at your child’s reading level to help increase his/her fluency and comprehension through the quizzes provided. Login information will be sent home soon.
    • Dream Box should be used by your child to practice math skills for 15 or 20 minutes weekly, if possible. This is a fun & motivating online program that moves at your child’s level and pace and tracks his/her progress. Login information will be sent home soon.
