Degrees and Certifications:
I am very excited to be teaching second grade at Highland Lakes this year. I wanted to share a little bit about myself. I look forward to a very exciting year with your child.
I graduated from Youngstown State University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education K-8, and in Special Education Learning Disabled and Mentally Challenged K-12. In addition, I have attended numerous continuing education classes and workshops to increase my knowledge of the most recent and innovative ideas and strategies while working with all children. I have my full gifted endorsement. I am beginning my 39th year of teaching. Prior to moving to Phoenix in 1987, I taught 6 years in Ohio at the middle school and high school levels. After relocating to Phoenix, I taught special education K-3 in the Communication Disorder Program for 11 years and regular second grade for 9 years, first grade for 8 years and 4 years in the Renaissance 1-2 program. This is my 32nd year of teaching with the Deer Valley School District. In May, 2008, I was selected Deer Valley’s Teacher of the Year. I have been featured in two books: Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and Who’s Who Among America’s Professionals. I previously received the Deer Valley Pride Award, The Gold Star Award and a Martial Arts Instructor Award. My primary goal is to write a series of children’s books.
During my time away from the classroom, I am a first-degree black belt and my son is a third degree black belt. We both enjoy martial arts. I also enjoy traveling, hiking, reading, crafts, horseback riding, motorcycles and going to the Ben Avery shooting range. No, I do not own a motorcycle but my husband does. I really enjoy the outdoors when the weather cools down. Each summer, we travel and visit many interesting places in the United States. However, I am not fond of driving through the mountains or over bridges.
I strive to provide a project based learning classroom environment with a variety of activities geared to each child’s individual specific learning needs. I enjoy watching children explore and expand their minds with as much knowledge as possible. I try to provide as many learning opportunities as possible. It is evident that every child learns differently. What may work for one child isn’t always the answer for another. I hope to make your child’s school year experience fun and exciting. I look forward to getting to know your child and help him or her to learn to their fullest potential. If you should have any questions, concerns or suggestions, my door is always open. I look forward to working with you and your child in making this a very successful and rewarding time in your child’s educational journey.
