Essential Academic & Social Behaviors
Deer Valley Unified School District uses the term essential academic and social behaviors when referring to the concepts and skills students must practice in preparation for success after formal education (Buffum, et. al 2018). We believe academic and social skills can be learned by all students and applied in every learning environment, campus setting, and community. The DVUSD Portrait of a Graduate showcases specific skills and attitudes prioritized after hearing from our students, parents, and teachers. It complements a shared vision in Deer Valley - to graduate lifelong learners who will successfully compete, lead and positively impact the world.
Every Deer Valley campus has identified and defined essential behaviors in the form of a behavior matrix. These standards are highly visible and taught to all students to promote a safe school climate. Students demonstrating the skills are reinforced consistently throughout their school day. We encourage all students to pursue personal growth and wellness not just inside the classroom, but through their involvement in the various athletic programs, activities, clubs and community events offered across Deer Valley. Many campuses enhance their academic and social behavior instruction through the use of a program. Programs provide resources for skill teaching, student practice, and application.
Current academic and social skill programs in the district include:
Additionally, through a unique partnership with Southwest Behavioral Health and Arizona Youth and Family Services, students at various schools in our district have access to a wellness counselor. Counselors provide resources for families and support students in distress.
