    DVUSD Return to School

    07.15.20

    DVUSD Families,

We have an important update for all Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) parents, guardians, and students. Last evening, the DVUSD Governing Board voted on and approved a delay for the start of in-person school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This letter is long, but we hope that it answers all of the questions you may have.

The newly approved plan means K-12 school remains online from August 3 through the end of the first quarter (October 9). For parents who select sending their students to campus, students would return to school buildings following Fall Break on Wednesday, October 14. Monitoring of COVID-19 cases will continue, and if significant improvement is made, the return to campus could be adjusted to an earlier date.

As a result of the newly approved plan, DVUSD and our schools will provide two options for K-12 student learning this fall: On Campus/Virtual (with your campus teacher until school buildings reopen) and Deer Valley Online Academy (full-time online). Here are updated descriptions of each option:

return to learning on campus virtually

On Campus/Virtual (with your campus teacher until school buildings reopen)

      • This is the option for parents who intend to have their child(ren) come back to campus when school buildings reopen.
      • Classes are taught by student’s campus certified teacher(s) starting August 3.
      • Students are learning new content in their new grade with their new teacher(s).
      • Learning experience and student expectations are different from the home learning that we held in the spring.
      • Teacher-directed instruction via synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous (independent) learning using Canvas, the district online learning platform
      • This option follows the school’s master schedule to support transition to in-person learning.
      • High school students are eligible for Athletics.
      • In this option, courses available include Renaissance, AP, IB, Language Immersion, and Dual Enrollment classes.
      • Services will be provided for specific student subpopulations such as gifted, English Learners, and Special Education.
      • Walk-Up to Math (acceleration) options and faster pace/compacting curriculum options available for all grade levels.
      • A sample schedule and more information will be coming.

return to learning dv online academy

Deer Valley Online Academy (full-time online)

      • Deer Valley Online Academy is best for those parents who either need a flexible student schedule due to parent work schedules or parents who intend to have their child remain in an online environment for the entire first semester or academic year due to concerns with COVID-19.
      • Students are learning new content in their new grade taught by a DVUSD certified Online Academy teacher with both live instruction and self-paced screen time.
      • This option is Free. School starts August 3.
      • If a parent of an open-enrolled student chooses this option, their student’s open enrollment status remains intact.
      • High school students are eligible for Athletics.
      • Services will be provided for specific student subpopulations such as gifted, English Learners, and Special Education.
      • Walk-Up to Math (acceleration) options and faster pace/compacting curriculum options available for all grade levels.
      • Courses NOT available with this option: AP, IB, Language Immersion, and Dual Enrollment classes.
      • For a detailed description of Deer Valley Online Academy (full-time online), visit www.dvusd.org/OnlineAcademy
      • Registration for Deer Valley Online Academy is now open at www.dvusd.org/gosignmeup
        • *Reminder: 9th -12th grade students who want to register for part-time online courses need to register at www.dvusd.org/gosignmeup - Registration is now open and school starts August 3.

The third model that was previously introduced, the On Flex Model, is not a current option in the new School Board approved plan. As you may recall in previous letters, we stated that, “If school closure due to the pandemic is extended significantly past August 17, On Flex students will begin the school year virtually with their On Campus teacher(s) until schools are able to open and return in person and the On Flex model begins.”

What Happens Now & What About The Survey You May Or May Not Have Taken

First, we thank all parents who took the survey and those who have taken a significant amount of time considering their options for their child(ren). We recognize that the new plan will change decisions for some families. Please know, we have now closed the survey. Below we have laid out various scenarios, one of which should apply to you and your family.

    1) I didn’t take the survey. That’s ok. We will assume you want to return to On Campus/Virtual until school buildings reopen. There is nothing further you need to do. Your school will communicate with you over the next two weeks. If, however, you would now prefer to enroll in the Deer Valley Online Academy, register now at www.dvusd.org/gosignmeup

    2) I took the survey and selected On Campus. You are all done, no need to do anything further. Your school will communicate with you over the next two weeks. If, however, you would now prefer to enroll in the Deer Valley Online Academy, register now at www.dvusd.org/gosignmeup

    3) I took the survey and chose On Flex. This option does not currently exist. If you want the On Campus/Virtual option - you are all done, you do not need to do anything further. Your school will communicate with you over the next two weeks. If, however, you would prefer to enroll in the Deer Valley Online Academy, register now at www.dvusd.org/gosignmeup

    4) I took the survey and chose Deer Valley Online Academy (free full-time online). You must complete the registration process to fully enroll. The direct registration link is https://www.dvusd.org/gosignmeup. For more information about this option, visit www.dvusd.org/OnlineAcademy  Please note: You must register for the Deer Valley Online Academy (free full-time online). If you took the survey, but did not register, you are not registered. We will assume you are returning On Campus/Virtual until school buildings open.

    5) I took the survey and chose Deer Valley Online Academy (full-time online), but want to change to On Campus/Virtual.

If you only took the survey, but have not completed registration for the Deer Valley Online Academy (full-time online) at www.dvusd.org/gosignmeup, we will assume you want to return to On Campus/Virtual until buildings reopen. There is nothing further you need to do. Your school will communicate with you over the next two weeks.

If you completed registration through GoSignMeUp for the Deer Valley Online Academy (free full-time online), but now want the On Campus/Virtual option, you must cancel your registration by sending an email to online@dvusd.org with the subject line “cancel.” Include your full name and your student’s full name and student ID number in the email. That is all you need to do to be back with your On Campus/Virtual teacher(s).

If, after reading all of these scenarios and viewing the information on our website, you still have questions, you can send your questions in an email to ReturnToLearning@dvusd.org

Our weekly parent update that was emailed and posted on Monday, including information about our Community Education Preschool program and Staycation Camp that is being extended until at least Friday, August 14. If you didn’t save that email, you can read that information here.

Future distributions of technology devices will take place at our schools. More information will be sent out in the coming weeks and posted at www.dvusd.org/ReturnToSchool with details.

This has been a difficult and trying time for the Deer Valley community. We appreciate the patience and flexibility of families as we continue to balance the work of educating our students with keeping students and staff safe and healthy. In the upcoming weeks, please watch for communications from your school about virtual Meet the Teacher nights.
