RENAISSANCE Q & A
-
Do siblings of gifted students receive preferential placement?
No, having a sibling in the Renaissance program does not impact the testing process or student placement. Placement is based on a student's gifted testing scores and the application process.
If you have other siblings who would like to attend one of our Bright Beginnings/ Renaissance schools but they are not part of the program, you may complete open enrollment. We suggest you apply for open enrollment as soon as possible.
-
What if we would like our child to attend the school regardless of program acceptance?
Regardless of gifted placement, if you would like your child to attend Canyon Springs, Highland Lakes, Las Brisas, or Hillcrest M.S., we recommend applying for open enrollment as soon as possible. Please note: You cannot enroll at the school without first being accepted via open enrollment -OR- placement with your home school.
-
My child receives special education services with an IEP or 504. Does this impact placement in a Renaissance classroom?
Students who meet the application requirements are eligible to apply for Renaissance. Families must provide a copy of the student's special education records with the Renaissance application in order to ensure appropriate placement. Placement is contingent upon the student's readiness for content area acceleration and the special education resources available.
BRIGHT BEGINNINGS Q & A
-
What happens if my child is identified for gifted services in a Bright Beginnings classroom?
If your child is identified for gifted services, you may apply for placement in our Bright Beginnings program. Students are placed on a first come, first served basis. Only students who register at the school and who are identified for services on a state-approved gifted assessment (or have qualifying gifted identification scores) can be placed into the Bright Beginnings program.
-
Why do some programs integrate a multiage approach?
Multiage is a research-based program option that allows gifted learners to grow and develop in a heterogeneous learning environment. This is not a combo classroom where two grades work on separate curriculum. Rather, in a multiage classroom, students are flexibly grouped based on ability (not age). Students may receive individualized instruction based upon academic needs and learner interest.
-
Do graduates of Bright Beginnings Kindergarten automatically qualify for Renaissance?
Renaissance is a gifted separate program with specific qualifications. Graduates of the Bright Beginnings program are not guaranteed placement into Renaissance.
While Renaissance placement is not guaranteed, Bright Beginnings frequently provides a pathway for our young scholars to continue with one or more gifted services.

What can we do if we missed the testing window in DVUSD?
Families may have their child tested by a private provider. Information is available on our website: www.dvusd.org/Page/65820. If you have your child assessed by a private provider, send the score report to GiftedServices@dvusd.org for review.
