• Meet Your 8th Grade Team

    Mrs. Gruenewald - Language Arts

Hi, I am Mrs. Gruenewald, and I am so excited to be your 8th Grade ELA Teacher. This will be my third year at Sunset Ridge and I have worked for Deer Valley Unified School District at Boulder Creek High School for a combined 10 years teaching ELA to Freshman through Seniors. The last four were specifically Freshman Honors Students. Even though I loved the high school setting, I decided to make the switch  to Sunset Ridge so that I can teach at the same school my children attend. I am looking forward to working with you and preparing you for your next journey into high school.

My husband and I have lived in the Tramanto/Desert Hills community for the last 11 years, and can not imagine raising our family anywhere else, we just love it "up here".

I grew up in the valley, attended a local high school, and went to ASU for my bachelors in secondary education. I am a born and raised Phoenician and have watched this valley grow! I love to hike, jog, and spend time with my family (and dogs) outdoors as much as possible. I am a wife and mom to my favorite people in the world, and if you ever see us "out and about", please say hello.

I truly want all of my students to have a successful school year. If at anytime you have any concerns, questions, etc. please contact me at Lindsey.Gruenewald@dvusd.org

    Mr.Chapman - Science

I moved to Phoenix on an extremely hot August day in 2004. Prior to moving to Arizona, I grew up and lived in Seattle, WA. The polar opposite beauty of the Sonoran Desert--and the wide open skies--drew me to the Valley of the Sun.

Before pursuing a degree in education, and a career as a teacher, I worked in the financial industry for 10 years and computer programming 5 years prior. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Education from Arizona State University. This will be my 15th year in the Deer Valley Unified School District. My teaching career has ranged from Kindergarten, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and now 8th grade! I have always been a very inquisitive person, which ultimately led me to get my middle-school endorsements in both General and Social Sciences. I am excited to explore with my students the natural phenomena that often go unnoticed or are simply ignored or taken for granted. Imagine what our daily lives would look like had there not been so many inquisitive individuals throughout history!

When I am not in the classroom, my husband of 25 years and I enjoy spending time with family and friends, exploring the local area, traveling to other states and countries, and just kicking back at home. There is always some project around the house or new hobby I find to keep busy with.
I hope my students come to recognize they are each an integral member of the ever-shrinking global community in which we all live. It is my belief that each student brings to the class an individual base of knowledge, talent, and ability. Each of my students will have the opportunity to be academically successful!
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly derek.chapman@dvusd.org.

    Mr. Bowman  - Social Studies

Bowman Hello! My name is Sean Bowman and I am your 8th Grade Social Studies teacher. I am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you. This 8th Grade team is amazing and I feel very lucky to be a part of it.

I graduated from the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University. I have a highly qualified endorsement in middle grade Social Sciences as well as a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education.

I love bringing history to life! I strive to make the content relevant to your lives in hopes you will make a personal connection to what you have learned. Be ready to have fun as we will be doing a lot of hands-on activities and projects this year. Please be advised, however, that this class will be very challenging, and I hold all of my students to high expectations.

On a more personal note, I have been married to my lovely wife for 11 years. We have a 9-year-old son, Maxx, as well as a miniature schnauzer named Charger and a cat named Walrus. I moved back to Phoenix in June of 2008 after living in San Diego coaching football. Prior to that, I played NCAA football at the University of Wyoming where I majored in Communications. Along with football, surfing, golf, and skateboarding, I play in a “reggae/rock” band and a fun cover band and love spending time with family and friends.

Along with teaching 8th Grade Social Studies here at Sunset Ridge, I am also the Student Council Advisor, Athletic Director, and 8th Grade Campus Leadership Representative.
Teaching and history have always been a passion of mine! I am so excited to take this historical journey in the classroom with you. Let’s have an AMAZING year together!!!

    Mrs. Hartley-Math

Hello and Welcome to 8th Grade Math! My name is GayLynne Hartley and this will be my 18th year of teaching but my 2nd as an 8th grade math teacher! I have taught 4th grade for 12 years and 6th grade math for 6 years here at Sunset Ridge.  Math is my passion and I am so excited to get the opportunity to teach it! I love teaching and inspiring young minds to learn! We are going to have a fun-filled year of learning!
I grew up in Illinois on a farm in a small town of 1000 called Winchester. I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree from Western Illinois University in General Studies and Nursing. I worked as an open heart surgical nurse for 9 years but I had always dreamed of becoming a teacher! After my children were born, I decided to become a substitute teacher in the Chicagoland area! I fell in love with teaching so I then decided to go back to school and get my teaching degree! We moved to Phoenix in 2003 and I decided to attend ASU to pursue my dream of teaching. I graduated with a Masters Degree in Elementary Education. Since then, I have become highly qualified to teach Math, Science, and English for middle school as well as finishing my gifted endorsement.  I am currently pursuing my endeavor in getting my second  Master's degree in Leadership Education to become a principal and will be doing my internship this year in October!
The one thing you will learn a lot about this year is my family. I have a wonderful husband of 29 years, Dan, and three beautiful children. I am an empty nester! My son, Brock, plays professional baseball in the Pacific Association League for the Sonoma Stompers in Sonoma, California! Go Stompers! In his spare time he is pursuing a Pharmacy degree. My daughter, Allye, graduated  from Grambling State University in Louisiana with a degree in psychology. She works with autistic children. Last but certainly not least is my daughter Mckinney, who graduated from NAU this past April and will be getting married in October.  We have many pets; two teacup Chihuahuas named Trinity and Prince, and many fish.I also have a grandpup, Luna, who is a Belgian Malinois. I enjoy spending time with my family, shopping, going to see movies, and I LOVE sports. I am an avid football fan as well as a die-hard Cardinals baseball fan and Illini (U of I), and especially when my son and daughters are playing!
I love teaching and watching children develop into life-long learners. I have very high expectations for my students! I also won the prestigious award of being Teacher of the Year in 2017-2018. I try to be very open and available to my students so that they have a safe learning environment! I also look forward to getting to know you and your family for a wonderful and successful school year!
