During the time the office is closed 1:15 - 2:00, only students with emergencies may come to the Health Office. At the beginning of the school year, I will visit each classroom and explained that an emergency is any one of the 4 B's:
Bleeding more than 2 band aids can handle. Breathing (always come with a buddy if you are having trouble breathing!). Vomiting (remember to throw up into the bucket in the Health Office, not on the floor, wall, or nurse.)
Broken bones.
HEALTH TIP #1
If anyone in your family is diagnosed with strep throat, throw their toothbrush away 24 hours after beginning antibiotics. Strep can live on a tooth brush and reinfect the user.
HEALTH TIP #2
Backpack safety: Carrying too heavy of a load in your backpack can cause low back pain in children. Most children carry more than 30% of their body weight. It is recommended that students only carry 10- 15% of their body weight. For example, a child weighing 50 pounds should only carry 5-7 pounds. A child weighing 100 pounds should carry only 10-15 pounds. The backpack should also be worn correctly by using both shoulder straps.
Hearing & Vision Screening
During the school year some students will have their hearing and vision screened. Parent volunteers trained by the school nurse may help with these screenings. We use the guidelines and laws of our state to determine who is screened.
Hearing
According to the guidelines, students in kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 6th grade have their hearing screened. Any student new to Deer Valley School District or in a special program, such as speech, in any grade is also screened. If a student does not pass the initial screening, our School District Audiologist (hearing specialist) rechecks his/her hearing
