Parents/guardians of DVUSD students may access their child's library book circulation history by logging into destiny.dvusd.org with the student's district credentials. Choose your child's school. Click on Login (top right of page). Input student district username and ID#. Go to My Info (top tab bar) and View History (button at top right of Items Out page) .
Parents/guardians who have questions regarding a book in the library collection may speak to their school's library clerk or teacher librarian. If a parent/guardian wishes to challenge a book's placement in a library, he or she will utilize the DVUSD Challenged Library Materials process.
DVUSD Library Book Selection Process
AT DVUSD, teacher librarians and library clerks are expected to check professional reviews along with recommended book levels before ordering books. Library staff strives to order books that reflect the diversity, interests, and curricular needs of our student and staff population.
Library clerks send book lists to the district Library Cataloger/District Lead Librarian, Gail Salameh, for review before ordering. If for some reason this does not happen and books are ordered without oversight, Ms. Salameh will identify inappropriate books when she catalogs them and will notify the library clerk responsible.
High school teacher librarians and the teacher librarian at Norterra Canyon are responsible for their school library book selections.
DVUSD school library new book selection is guided by the School Library Selection Criteria provided by the American Library Association (ALA).
When ordering new books for a DVUSD school library collection, teacher librarians (high school and Norterra Canyon) consider the ALA criteria and order titles that:
-
Support the school curriculum.
-
Support student interest and personal learning needs.
-
Honor teacher requests.
-
Balance the collection.
-
Support patron academic and maturity levels as determined by professional reviews (not crowd-sourced).
-
Generate active interest by patrons.
-
Provide high-quality literature by respected authors.
-
Have favorable reviews by professional review sources.
-
Represent the social, ethnic, and socio-economic diversity of the school community.
-
Provide differing viewpoints and perspectives on controversial issues.
Some of the professional review sources used in Deer Valley include School Library Journal, Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and Horn Book Guide.
