    1st Quarter

     

    Strand 1: Inquiry Process

     

    Essential Learning Objectives:

    *The Scientific Method can be applied to problem solving.

    *In every experiment, it is important to understand and control all variables.

     

    Assessments:

    *Observation, journal, scientific method pre/post tests, and lab reports

    *Foss Variables kit; Investigations: 1 Swingers, 2 Lifeboats, 3 Plane Sense, and 4 Flippers

     

     **Strand 1 will be reinforced and assessed all year using all Foss Kits**

     

     

     

    2nd Quarter

     

    Strand 4: Life Science

     

    Essential Learning Objectives:

    *There are many parts to the human skeletal system, each with different functions.

    *In order for movement to happen, muscles, tendons, and ligaments must work together.

    *Movement in the body is both voluntary and involuntary.

    *The nervous system is vital to the human body and consists of many different parts.

     

    Assessments:

    *Teacher observation, Science journals, student reflections, and teacher created.

    *Foss Kit Human Body: Investigations 1 Bones, 3 Muscles, and 4 Coordination.

     

     

    3rd Quarter

     

    Strand 6: Earth and Space Science

    Essential Learning Objectives:

    *Rotation and revolution have different outcomes

    *Space consists of many different types of objects

     

    Assessments:

    *Teacher observation, Science journals, student reflections (moon journal), teacher created projects and assessments (planet research project and presentation).

     

    Strand 5 Physical Science

    Topic: Levers and Pulleys

     

    Essential Learning Objectives:

    *Simple machines are used to overcome natural forces and to make work easier.

    *There are different types of levers and pulley systems that can be used for different types of work.

    *The effort and outcome from the use of a pulley can be predicted.

     

    Assessments:

    *Teacher observation, Science journals, and student reflections.

    4th Quarter

     

    Strand 5 Physical Science

    Topic: Mixtures and Solutions

    *Mixtures have different properties than solutions.

    *Concentration is the amount of matter dissolved in a measure of liquid.

    *A chemical reaction produces new products.

     

    Assessments:

    *Teacher observation, Science journals, and student reflections.

    *Foss Kit Mixtures and Solutions: Investigations 1 Separating Mixtures, 3 Concentration, and 4 Fizz Quiz.

     

    Strand 2: History and Nature of Science

    Strand 3: Science in Personal and Social Perspectives

     

    Essential Learning Objectives:

    *Scientific knowledge changes over time.

    *Habitats are affected by natural hazards and human influence.

     

    Assessments:

    *Teacher observation, Science journals, student reflection, Scientist report, and Science Inquiry Expo Project.
