In sixth grade, we believe in fostering independence, personal responsibility, and citizenship. As the final step on the journey to middle school, students have the opportunity to learn about themselves and the environment around them through collaboration, inquiry-based learning and the use of technology. Our 6th grade Science teachers partner with Arizona Project WET and the University of Arizona to bring science into the classroom. The unit begins with a classroom visit from Project WET, where students are introduced to riparian habitats and ecology. Then teachers implement the high-quality curriculum to help students design an experiment about the Arizona habitats. Students work collaboratively to ask a question, develop procedures and methods to answer the question and research an animal found in the riparian habitat. The final activity for the project is a field trip to the gorgeous Hassayampa River Preserve where they meet scientists and perform their experiment in the field. These scientists provide an important opportunity for students to learn about Science careers and are a crucial link to real-world experiences. Upon their return to Copper Creek, students create a presentation to share their experience and findings with others. This is the highlight of our spring semester!
"Copper Creek students will think critically, respect diversity and value collaboration."
