    Dear Coyote Families,

I am so excited to be welcoming our new and returning students to Mountain Shadows Elementary School for the 2017-2018 school year.  We are heading into our third year of the Leader in Me journey towards our Lighthouse accomplishment. This will be an exciting year full of new opportunities and adventures for everyone, with a special celebration at the end of the school year.

As a Leadership Academy who focuses on building leaders, we believe that our students need to be equipped with self-confidence and skills in order to thrive in the 21st century.  Through The Leader in Me, students use the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Leaders to acquire the necessary tools that will help them become successful leaders of their own learning, both in the classroom and out.  This year our focus will be on deepening leadership knowledge to increase engagement and academic achievement through brain-based learning.  We believe that every child is a genius!

The Mountain Shadows staff continues to support our continuous improvement process of increasing student achievement.  This year, our main focus will be in the area of mathematics as we continue to build upon the English Language Arts (ELA) skills.  Students will continue to establish goals and track their own growth data.  Moving forward with 21st century skills, we will continue to use technology in the classrooms to engage your child in learning. We are very excited to continue our 21st Century after school program that supports our students in gaining academic achievement.

We will also continue to implement a rigorous academic curriculum that will support and enhance your child’s academic ability.  With the implementation of the Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards (Common Core), we believe that your child/ren will be more prepared for the future.  These standards are more focused and concentrate on critical thinking skills.

As always, safety is priority.  I ask that you please follow the drop-off and pick-up procedures as you continue to set good examples for our students.  I realize the timeliness is longer during the first part of the year, but it is necessary for keeping our students safe.  Also, if you have visited the front office, we have received additional safety precautions as part of the voter-approved safety bond. We are excited to keep safety as a high importance. I appreciate your support in following the rules and keeping our campus a safe place to be.

I am thrilled to be leading a campus that employs teachers who are passionate and provide innovative and effective instruction to their students.   The staff works diligently to guide and facilitate learning throughout the school day.  Our goal is to keep you informed so that you are able to be involved in your children’s education.  Working together in partnership will create a positive learning environment that will help increase student success.

I am eager to meet you and share all of the wonderful opportunities that Mountain Shadows has available for your child.  I look forward to our adventure together and see how our great leaders shine in the 2017-2018 school year.

    Educationally yours,
    Janet Gilbert
