Library Services
The mission of the DVUSD Library Media Center staff is to work collaboratively with teachers and students to support academics, to promote reading for pleasure and information, and to prepare our community of learners with the life-long skills necessary to be competent, critical, ethical, and independent seekers and users of information.
National School Library Standards
- The K-6, K-8, and middle school libraries are each staffed with a Library Clerk who manages the Library Media Center (LMC) schedule, checks materials in and out of the LMC, reads stories to classes, models searches for materials and information, orders new materials based on student and staff recommendations, processes all new materials, and organizes a wide variety of library programming to encourage students in their quest for enjoyable reading and their need for reliable information.

Each DVUSD high school library is staffed with a full-time, state certified Teacher/Librarian, who collaborates with classroom teachers to integrate the National School Library Standards and the College and Career Ready standards with library instruction. Teacher/Librarians provide student instruction for research strategies (including electronic and print sources), ethical use of information, evaluation of sources for inclusion in research, and support students across the various curricula with academics and technology. Additionally, Teacher/Librarians provide professional development and in-service training for the school staff to implement district, state and national standards.

Library Book Selection at DVUSD:
AT DVUSD, teacher librarians and library clerks are expected to check professional reviews and recommended book levels before ordering books. Library staff strives to order books that reflect the diversity, interests, and curricular needs of our student and staff population.
Library clerks send book lists to the District Lead Librarian for review before ordering. If for some reason this does not happen and books are ordered without oversight, the District Library Cataloger will identify inappropriate books when creating the library book record and will notify the library clerk responsible.
High school teacher librarians are responsible for high school library book selection.
Some professional reviews used in Deer Valley include School Library Journal, Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and Horn Book Guide.
