Parents and students will be able to see only the stop location, pick up, and drop off times for routes.

The Deer Valley Unified School District Transportation Department offers transportation services for:

• Kindergarten - students who live over 1/2 mile from school.
• Grades 1-6 - students who live over 1 mile from school.
• Grades 7-8 - students who live over 1 1/2 miles from school.
• Grades 9-12 - students who live over 1 3/4 miles from school.

It is our goal to provide a safe, efficient pupil transportation service. To accomplish this goal, there are responsibilities and rules for students, parents, and staff. We also have set expectations for a successful ride on a DVUSD bus. Parents, please become familiar with the rules and procedures, and discuss them with your children. Thank you

Respect on a bus is:

• Always use appropriate language.
• Be courteous, remain seated and facing front with feet on the floor.
• Keep your hands, feet and objects to yourself.
• Demonstrate appropriate behavior at all bus stops.
• Do not throw anything in or out of the bus.
• No gum chewing, eating, or drinking anything other than water.

Responsibility on a bus is:

• Be ready to board the bus on time.
• Display courteous and respectful conduct to yourself and others.
• Follow bus procedures, as directed by the bus driver.
• Report illegal or inappropriate activities.
• Be accountable for your electronic devices.

Caring on a bus is:

• A student moves over to a different seat without hesitation.
• Use the trash can by the driver.
• Wait for the bus on the sidewalk.
• Do not deface or damage property on the bus or at the bus stop.
• Speak kindly to peers and your driver.
• Own your behavior and work to improve your behavior when mistakes are made.

ITEMS THAT MUST BE PROPERLY STORED

SKATEBOARDS, ROLLERBLADES, AND SCOOTERS MUST BE IN A BACKPACK OR SOME OTHER TYPE OF CLOSED BAG.

ITEMS NOT ALLOWED ON THE BUS

GLASS, ANIMALS, INSECTS, LASER PENS, PAINTBALLS, AND MEDICATIONS. (This is not an all-inclusive list)

Large musical instruments and sports equipment are required to be transported by the parent/guardian to and from school.

DVUSD bus drivers are required to follow DPS Minimum Safety Standard guidelines.

While students are riding the school bus or waiting at a designated bus stop, they are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful and orderly manner. Our primary goal is to ensure the safety of the children as they ride the bus. Listed below is an abbreviated list of bus rules and consequences. A copy of the complete school bus rules and bus misconduct guidelines will be sent home with each student at the beginning of the school year, and is available in the Student's Rights and Responsibilities Handbook.
 

1. Be courteous and follow the directions of the driver at all times.
2. Stay seated facing the front with your feet on the floor.
3. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself and inside the bus.
4. Do not display verbal or physical behavior that disrupts the ride.
5. No gum chewing, eating, drinking or tobacco.
6. Demonstrate appropriate behavior at the bus stop.

Consequences/Disciplinary Action for Infractions on the Bus

The administration will exercise discretion when determining consequences and may assign a more or less severe consequence than outlined in the guidelines below. All of the infractions and consequences listed in these discipline guidelines are in effect for all school vehicles. Depending on the location and severity of the infraction, the consequence may be in the vehicle and/or school. For example, fighting may result in a suspension from school as well as a loss of bus riding privileges. Some of the more common infractions (this is not an all-inclusive list) are listed below:

Students

We offer school bus transportation to all eligible students and expect all of our passengers to know and honor the DVUSD Bus Discipline Procedures and the Expectations for a Successful Bus Ride. Violations to the bus rules can put yourself others in UNSAFE situations. Students on DVUSD buses are under the direction of the school bus driver, and any student choosing not to obey these rules and expectations may be suspended or expelled from transportation for up to one year. 

Parents

Please take the time to go over the bus rules and expectations, and make certain your child understands them. Be sure your child is at the bus stop 5 minutes prior to the assigned stop time. Many school buses run multiple routes, and the driver cannot wait for a child who is late.  Once the bus doors are closed and the bus starts moving, the driver will not stop for late students.  This procedure is for the safety of your child.

Instruct your child in the safe manner of walking to and from the bus stop, to stand in a safe place to the side of the road when waiting for the bus at the bus stop, and to be respectful of adjacent property.

Drivers

In order to become an Arizona School Bus Driver, a person must meet very specific requirements as set forth by federal and state law. Drivers for the Deer Valley Unified School District are expected to maintain discipline while operating the bus in a safe manner. Each driver has received several types of training including (but not limited to) behind-the-wheel training, physical agility test, random drug tests, ongoing refresher instruction, proficiency in first aid/CPR, and student behavior management.

Drivers transporting medically fragile children or those with disabilities receive additional training in the care and management of these children.

We conduct bus evacuation emergency drills twice a year to ensure that our students know how to respond safely in an emergency.

Staff

Our transportation staff is dedicated to providing the safest transportation possible for your child. Our fleet operates during rush-hour traffic every school day, and although we do not schedule late buses, this can happen due to traffic congestion, accidents, weather conditions, road construction, bus breakdowns, and student discipline. We do ask for your patience and understanding during these times.

What If?

• My child is late? If your child fails to return home at his/her expected time, contact the school first. Please keep in mind there can be many reasons for a bus to be late on its route.
• My child receives a “Bus Incident Referral”. The District maintains a discipline procedure to ensure students follow the student conduct safety rules.
