A NOTE FROM THE SIERRA VERDE ART ROOM!

    Dear Parents and Guardians:

On behalf of the staff at Sierra Verde School, I am happy to welcome you to Sierra Verde, S.T.E.M. Academy, 2014 A+ School of Excellence, for another school year.  I am  Ms. Ting, and I will be your child’s art teacher this year. We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential. I am very excited about the coming school year and am committed to guiding all of my students to success.

Purpose of Art & Project Goals

Art projects at SV are based on problem-solving, designing and planning, and creating. Students will have chances to decide what kind of artwork they are going to make. Students are asked to come up with a visual plan which indicates steps they will take to complete their artwork. Then we offer time for hands-on work, where students practice their problem-solving and inquiry skills to create projects. In art, the process is more important than the final products.  I also try to have students draw upon their knowledge of other subjects they are learning when creating their work.

    Artsonia

I will be uploading students’ artwork periodically on Artsonia website for reference.  For details, please check the website “Artsonia” where I upload students’ projects: http://www.artsonia.com/schools/school.asp?id=118702

This website requires you to create an account for your child(ren). For those who already created an account, you are able to see any work posted for your child(ren). Please email me if you would like me to create an account for your child(ren). Select students’ artwork will also be displayed on a bulletin board in the hallway located in the front office.

    Grading in Art

The final project grades will take into account students’ participation in class, as well as completion and performance for each project assignment. Every student will receive two grades:

    Kindergarten to 5th grade.

    1) Daily Classwork Completion (40%) –

The effort grade reflects the level of participation in class as shown by the students’ showing up to class and showing interest in the assignments.

In order to receive further feedback on long-term projects, it is important that students make progress toward the final goal. Therefore, students will receive 5 points for daily participation. This will be entered on PowerSchool after school of the date they come to art.

5 --- Worked on assignment and completed task.

3 --- Partial completion of assigned task

             1 --- minimal/no completion

    2) Academic Performance grade (60%) –

This represents the combined performance on projects done inside and outside of class. Grades for projects will be entered throughout the semester so students (and parents) can chart the progress.

Combined, both grades make up students’ total grade for this class.

    3) Conduct grade

4 = Demonstrates above grade level proficiency independently

3 = Demonstrates grade level proficiency independently

2 = Demonstrates grade level proficiency with support

1 = Demonstrates below grade level proficiency with support

    Behavior Expectations

K-5th students at S.V. are expected to demonstrate an outstanding character, trustworthiness, responsibility, respect, fairness, caring, and citizenship. The classroom’s discipline policies are aligned with the four school wide rules:

                                        Be Respectful

                                        Be Responsible

                                        Be Safe

                                        Have a learner’s attitude- YES!

I like to encourage positive behavior. However, students still need to take responsibility when he/she is not making the right choice to interrupt other's learning. Following are the consequences for students who do not show the appropriate behavior:

                                        1.     Verbal warning

                                        2.     Verbal warning

                                        3.     Detention in the art room

                                        4.     After school detention with other teachers (on Wednesday)
