Mrs. Moreno

Welcome to Mrs. Moreno's Language Arts Class!!!

Reading and writing can open up a whole new world...it can take us to far away places, let us explore new friendships, meet new people, explore the world, go back in time, head to the future, anywhere we want to go! Not only are there great books, but there are poems to express feelings, song lyrics, magazines and newspapers to get information, even the Internet!

In language arts class, we will explore all of these! We will learn about the parts of stories, elements of poetry, and how to read for information.

We will be exploring ideas, cultures, reading and writing skills as they relate to the College and Career Readiness standards in these novel studies: "Bud, Not Buddy," by Christopher Paul Curtis, "Dragonwings," by Laurence Yep, and "Lightning Thief," by Rick Riordan.

In addition, we will begin using the newly district-adopted curriculum, Harcourt Collections. Here is an introduction, taken from their website: "Collections, the new ELA Common Core program for Grades 6–12, helps students develop abilities to analyze complex texts, determine evidence, reason critically, and communicate thoughtfully—the must-have skills for college and career. With a digital and print approach, Collections transcends the traditional with state-of-the–art features that resonate with today’s students." If you would like to preview the curriculum, please click here: http://www.hmhco.com/shop/education-curriculum/literature-and-language-arts/literature/collections

We will also be reading the newspaper, Reader's Theatre, plays, and various literature books.

 A Little Bit About Me

I am very excited to be your reading and writing teacher because I love to read and write and I love to teach!! My favorite kinds (genres) of books are historical and realistic fiction!

Oh, I also love a good ghost story, either real or fiction. You might find lots of ghost stories and poems by Edgar Allan Poe in my classroom. One of my favorite TV shows is "Ghosthunters" on the SciFi channel. I also love watching the Discovery and History channels. There are some great documentaries on ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt.

Have you ever read "National Geographic" or "Archaeology" magazines? I have lots in my classroom. I also have "Stone Soup" magazines which include stories written and illustrated by kids your age.

I have a bachelor's degree in education and a minor in English. Before becoming a teacher, I was a training specialist and technical writer in northern California. I worked for Bank of America and Vision Service Plan. While I loved teaching adults, I realized I loved teaching kids more, especially after having my two children. We have lived in Anthem for 12 years with our two cats and our "Schnuggle" dog (he is part Schnauzer/part Pug), Cookie. This year is my tenth year teaching sixth grade language arts at Diamond Canyon.

I am also a musician and have taught guitar lessons for the past 30 years; ten of those years I have taught at the Anthem Community Center. I am in a Celtic band called Kilted Spirit. You can find our music and performance schedule at www.kiltedspirit.com. I like all kinds of music, especially pop, folk, classic rock, alternative, and classical.

I can't wait to get to know all of you!
