We do NOT offer full-day preschool at this time.Developmental Preschool at Union Park
Our program falls under the "umbrella" of Special Education. The primary mission of Developmental Preschool is to service students with disabilities and provide early intervention to help alleviate developmental gaps before entering Kindergarten. In our classroom, we have students with a wide and varying spectrum of needs; ranging from mild communication deficits to more pronounced cognitive delays. We provide a range of therapies within the classroom; all integrated within playtime, exploration and conversation. We maintain a minimum 5:1 ratio of students:staff. We also enroll children to serve as Peer Models (or sometimes called a "typical peer"). Research has taught us that preschool age children learn best when they are playing with peers their own age. They feel curious and the desire to communicate with peers is often more motivating than any lesson a teacher might design! So while your child is participating and learning in our classroom... he is providing invaluable modeling of how to use language effectively, how to demonstrate self-control, how to share, how to listen attentively, how to express or respond to feelings, and many more school readiness skills. The Peer Models are a very important piece of our therapeutic approach. That is why we reserve a number of spots in each class for our non-disabled Preschool friends. All students will grow and learn in our classroom. We teach an accredited Preschool curriculum which prepares students for the academic demands of Kindergarten. Thematic units include literacy, STEM, arts, gross motor, and fine motor development. But additionally, your child will likely learn to be more accepting of diversity, and more empathetic to students who learn differently than he does. He will learn leadership and compassion. These are some of the intangible gifts of being a Peer Model.Preschool Peers pay tuition to participate in the classroom-$150 month for a 3-day week or $200 month for a 4-day week.
If you are interested in having your child be a Preschool Peer, there is a non-refundable $25 application fee. Preschool Peers will be placed based on the order the applications are received. There are a limited number of spots available. A waitlist will be created after the spots are filled. For questions please contact the Early Childhood Office at 602-467-6013.
