Mr. Segersten

Dear Community and Families of Gavilan Peak,

Welcome to Gavilan Peak, home of the mighty Firebirds!  It is hard to believe that the end of the first quarter is upon us.  Man, time flies when you enjoy what you do.  I can speak for the staff that we each feel fortunate to do what we do.  It is especially gratifying to see our students grow in academics but also socially and emotionally.

This year we have decided that while we continue to work on your students IQ, we will focus on their EQ (Emotional Quotient) as well.  Their EQ often is the catalyst to their success academically.  What will this look like for students at GP?  Perhaps, you may have already noticed some of the effects in your student. It really is a transformation of students and their own self talk. Our partner “All Things EQ” and our staff are working towards helping students improve their positive self talk. If we start our day negative it likely is going to be a bad day.  We are focusing on helping students start the day positive and carry that feeling with them throughout the day.

As always, Gavilan Peak continues to be an education innovator. This year many grade levels will be taking a Coding and Technology class with a teacher hired specifically for that purpose.  We also are embracing Problem Based Learning to focus on necessary real world skills to be successful in today’s world.  We have many STEM focused lessons that focus on 21st century skills.  Gavilan Peak is one of only a few Deer Valley Schools who focuses on assisting all teachers to complete the requirements to add the provisional gifted endorsement to their teaching certificate.  These gifted strategies are effective and beneficial for all GP students.  Gavilan Peak also continues to be the premier Mandarin Language Immersion program in the state of Arizona with both local and international visitors looking at our program as a guide.

Did you know that in Kindergarten and 1st grade we have 1 to 1 iPads?  This is a great way to get students started in understanding how technology can be a learning tool.  Also in 1st and 2nd grades we have robots, “beebots”, that assist students in learning the basics of coding.  In 2nd through 8th grade we have 2 to 1 laptops or chrome books.  We also have several technology based programs available at certain grade levels that enhance student learning. Drones, for example, are being used as a learning tool in 6th grade science this year.

The teachers and staff at Gavilan Peak are excited to see where this year will take us.  Each year we focus on a theme. This year our theme is “Perspective”.  Looking at things from another perspective can give us new opportunities to learn, build relationships, and grow as a person, helping us be better equipped for what the future will bring.

We truly thank you for the opportunity to take part in educating your children.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at Chad.segersten@dvusd.org and Nicole.johnson@dvusd.org.

And remember, Firebirds, at GP we Dream, Create and Inspire.

Sincerely,

Chad Segersten, Principal
