Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! If you are new to Norterra Canyon or returning, we are excited to have you as part of our Pirate Family! This school year we will continue to recognize our Pirate PRIDE- Perseverance, Responsibility , Integrity, Diversity, Excellence and have PRIDE assemblies at the beginning of each full day Friday in our courtyard beginning with music playing at 8 AM and the PRIDE assembly beginning at 8:15. We will celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of students and staff, hear of upcoming events, celebrate the MASK Academy focus and pass along the Pirate PRIDE Flag to the next deserving class. Parents are encouraged to attend and enjoy this celebration with our staff and students.
As we enter our second year in partnership with the MASK Academy we will continue to focus on building and strengthening life skills for elementary school-age children focusing on three themes: Relational Development, Digital Solutions, and Health and Wellness. Relational Development focuses on social skills. Digital Solution focuses on technology safety and use. Health and Wellness focuses on healthy lifestyle choices. Not only does MASK support our students, but they will also present three MASK Parent University on our campus during the school year. The Parent University is aimed "to engage, educate and empower audiences with the knowledge, resources and tools to make safe, healthy choices. The E3 lessons brings a comprehensive approach to educating parents from kindergarten through college and is designed to present the latest trends and information at an age-appropriate level." We are continuing with our candidacy to the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IB MYP). Last year we experienced many successful adventures with IB MYP and we are looking forward to the continued growth this year. One of the first apparent changes will be that some of the IB MYP teachers will be teaching multiple grade levels this year. Mrs. Lee will teach science to both 6th and 7th grade and Mrs. Sanschagrin will be teaching STEM to both 6th and 7th grade. Mrs. Whitlock and Mrs. Murray are both teaching sections of 6th and 7th grade ELA. Mrs. Eastburn will be teaching 6th and 7th grade humanities and Mr. Johnson will be teaching both 6th and 8th grade humanities. The IB MYP staff will continue to attend professional developments on the early release days this year and creating integrated thematic units across the curriculums of French, technology design, STEM, math, English Language Arts, science, social studies, and PE, choir, band, or art.
Please be sure to check out the teacher web page for your students. You can find them by looking under "Academics", selecting the grade level on the drop down menu, and then selecting your teacher from the list on the left hand side of the grade level page. Or you can search them by name under the "Staff Websites" section. The teacher web page will provide you with details about their classroom expectations, the weekly schedule, their grading policy, and other specific information that will be helpful for you to know.
PTSA has been a wonderful part of the Pirate community and we are looking forward to another fabulous year with events they sponsor to bring us all together! We are hoping to top our 200 Club ranking with membership this year and have all of our families join this wonderful organization and become part of a positive force in our school community!
