Reading, we are working towards independent reading gains (DRA levels). It is key to read daily asking “Does it match?” This is vital, as good readers focus on making their words match the print. Also, good readers will reread a sentence to enable smooth reading to achieve comprehension. At home read daily to help develop these essential skills; Book Boxes and RAZ kids are great resources.

Sight Words are important in your child’s ability to gain reading levels, keep practicing.

December is a busy holiday month AND a busy academic time. Report cards go home this month, so all students will complete several assessments.

DIBELS assessments will be given this month, including: Letter Naming Fluency (Point and say letter names), Phoneme Segmentation (saying all the sounds in the word, ex: pat- /p/ /a/ /t/), Nonsense Word Fluency (stretching/blending 2-3 letter words, ex: mop- drag finger under word and stretch “mmmoooppp” or just say the whole word), and sight words. These four skill tests are timed so fluency/quickness is a strength.

Use the DIBELS tab for more information.
