In reading we continue developing comprehension skills as we identify characters, setting, and major events. We are practicing sequencing events and retelling stories. We are learning to segment sounds in words to isolate and identify initial, medial, and final sounds.  These skills help us hear isolated sounds so that we can write words. We are orally blending individual sounds to make words.  This helps us to decode words in text, then blend sounds together to recode and read!  We are also learning to build word families and produce rhymes.

    Our nightly reading program kicks off this month in conjunction with our campus “Every Pirate Reads Every Day!” challenge! Students will bring poetry folders home Mondays and a book in bag with sight words to practice Tuesday – Thursday! For every 20 nights of reading, students earn special stickers!

    Sight Words

    Sight words are the most frequently occuring words in texts.  We memorize and read these words by sight, as they are not always decodable! Words we have learned so far include; I, the, a, see, to, by, my, am, am, is, can, and, you, it, has, it, he, she, in, me, with, good, his 

    Sight words we will learn this month include; on, of, here, are, was, do, be, had, look, want

    Continue practicing these words at home!


    In science we are learning about patterns in the sky with the sun, moon, and stars.  We will incorporate our 5 senses in science investigations.

    In social studies we are learning about Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving traditions from past to the present.

    In math, student are learning to compare height, length, weight, volume, and capacity.  We are developing and using the vocabulary terms; shorter/longer, taller/shorter, heavier/lighter, more/less, and equal/same as. We are also comparing sets of objects and numerals within 10 using vocabulary terms, less, more, fewer, greater, same, and equal.

    Using these vocabulary terms at home will help your child develop the concepts and see the relevance of the terms in real life! Keep practicing counting to 100!  Try starting at random numbers and counting on to a given number.

    Home Learning Ideas- Encourage your child to explain their learning and use the vocabulary in that subject area!  Find sight words in texts/signs/menus.  Add sticky notes around the house with sight words/letters/numbers/words).  Have your child read and/or say the sounds of the letters.  Create rhymes and have your child help produce more!   Give parts of a word and see if your child can say whole word (/t/-/i/-/p/).
