    Skill: Compare & Contrast

    • What is this skill? Compare and contrast means to tell how things are alike and different. Things that are alike are the same or almost the same. Things that are different are not the same.

    • Why is this important? Good readers look for clues that tell how things are alike and different.

      • Sight words:
        • Introduce: come, what, where
        • REVIEW: I, am, the, little, a, to, is, have, we, my, like, for, he, me, she, with, look, see, they, look, of, are, that, do, one, two, three, four, five, here, go, from, said, was, why, green, red, blue, in, had, it, can
      • Phonemic awareness:
        • Sound Deletion: Say "bet" without the /b/ sound OR Say "fish" without the /sh/ sound.
        • Sound substitution: If you change the /p/ in pot to /h/ what would you get?

        • Middle Vowel sounds
        • Syllables: How many syllables in word? 
        • Rhyming: Which words rhyme?
      • Phonics:
        • Decode, read and write...
          • Blends (sl, bl, st, cr, )
          • CVC words (ie, hot, cat, sun, pit, met)
          • Digraphs /sh/ /ch/  /th/  
          • Short and long vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u)
      • Writing:
        • Write a proper sentence using sight words and ALL sounds heard in words
        • Proper use of periods, question marks, exclamation points
        • Spaces between words
        • Daily journal writing
        • Creative writing with more than one sentence
