    Dear Coyote Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year. I am so excited to be working alongside our students, staff, parents, and community members. There are many opportunities for the students at Mountain Shadows Elementary School. This school year continues our Leader in Me Lighthouse initiative. As a Leadership School that focuses on building leaders, we believe that our students need to be equipped with self-confidence and skills in order to thrive in the 21st century. Through The Leader in Me, students use the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Leaders to acquire the necessary tools that will help them become successful leaders of their own learning, both in the classroom and out. This year we will continue to build capacity for leadership and learning at home.

The Mountain Shadows staff continues to support our continuous improvement process of increasing student achievement. We are so proud of our students and staff that earned the highest school growth in English Language Arts (ELA) for the Deer Valley Unified School District. This year, our main focus will be to continue to improve in the area of ELA. Reading plays the key role in student success. We will also focus on goal setting and goal attainment using the Leader in Me principles. Engagement within learning is our main goal in supporting student success.

As always, safety is top priority. It is of the upmost importance that visitors follow school procedures for dropping-off and picking-up students. Please always be a good role-model for our students, even if it means taking extra time to cross in the crosswalk and being patient in the pull-through lanes.  Please note that students may not be dropped off or picked up in our north “lollipop” parking lot. The exception is our preschool students. As an additional reminder, all visitors to the campus are expected to report to the office to get a visitor’s badge. Badges should be visible at all times. Your support in following the rules and keeping our campus a safe place for all is greatly appreciated!

It is exciting to lead a campus that employs staff who are passionate in providing innovative and effective instruction. Our goal is to keep you informed in the learning process so that you are able to be involved in your children’s education. Working together in partnership creates a positive learning environment that will help increase student success. Feedback is always appreciated. There are several opportunities to come visit throughout the school year.

I am eager to work collaboratively with you and share all of the wonderful opportunities that Mountain Shadows has available for your child. Please feel free to reach out to myself or our Dean of Students, Mrs. Larson, with any questions you may have. Happy 2019-2020 school year!

    Sincerely,

    Janet Gilbert
