What is a WOW? WOW stands for Wonderful Original Work of Art. Most WOW Projects are started in class with a specific theme (like self-portrait) or specific medium (any drawing material like graphit, colored pencil, or chalk) but are otherwise very student-centered and student-directed.
WOWs are completed during Studio Time, where students are given (almost) free-reign of the art room, self-directing to accomplish their goals for their artwork. We usually do 2-4 WOW Projects a quarter, and one counts as a mid-term, and another counts as a final.
Your student will need:
Their own sketchbook (bound white paper, no lined please), preferably spiral-bound
A handheld pencil sharpener
A personal sized/handheld eraser
A white gel pen
Ultra fine permanent marker for outlining
Three-pronged folder to keep handouts and portfolio pieces in, any color
Your student may want:
$$ Set of Drawing Pencils, ranging from dark to light
$ Tortillons (smudge sticks used for blending pencil)
$$$ Multi-thickness drawing pens similar to Pigma Micron (full sets are quite expensive, a few varying thicknesses would be more than enough)
$ Handheld or keychain sized hand sanitizer (we have ONE sink in the room)
$ Oversized T-shirt to protect clothing on “messy” days
Drawing in our sketchbooks will be an everyday activity. Sketchbooks can be bought from as cheap as a dollar at dollar stores to more expensive and spiral bound and/or hard-covered versions sold in the art supply sections of stores like Target or Michaels. We will learn shading techniques, plan for larger projects, and reflect on our learning using our sketchbooks. While students may choose to leave these in the classroom or take them home, there will be times I need them to stay in the classroom for grading purposes.
Fine-tipped markers and gel pens will be used extensively in addition to drawing pencils of many shades and the tools that go along with drawing.
Our whole class could benefit from:
Large hand sanitizer with pump
Baby wipes (we have one sink)
Cleaning wipes (easy table cleanup)
Duct Tape (any color or type is fine, even leftovers from home projects :) We aren’t picky)
Of course ANY donations would be welcome, I know I always have leftovers from craft projects at home and instead of throwing it away or letting it dry up in your craft closet, we would love to put it to use!
