• Welcome to Design and Technology Class

In this class, students will learn about technology with focus on Design. They will explore ideas in a way that promotes internal dialogue and leads them to ask questions and find answers. This can be little different from what they are used to as they will have to figure out solutions and they might feel stuck. They will be helped while giving them enough opportunity for self-discovery and exploration.

The students are introduced to coding by developing projects using websites like CODE.ORG, which is the curriculum we are using this year for DVUSD at Norterra Canyon. It is a program used across the world by millions of students, and in general very well developed, by computer science professional in consultation with educators. This program has different sections for Elementary, Middle school and High school grade levels. For Middle grades they learn process of problem solving, acquire and apply basic coding skills using Javascript as a learning tool.

Specifically, for 7th and 8th Grade we will work on "Computer Science Discoveries" module. Students will develop small activities/projects or games, learning and demonstrating successful use of coding skills. Inherent in this process is continual emphasis on problem solving skills, with scaffolding.

For 6th Grade, we will complete "Computer Science Fundamentals - Express" course in this year. It is a compressed version of 6 courses for grade levels K through 5. All lessons promote problem-solving skills while introducing them to coding, and simple programing language blocks.

Students will also acquire and refine keyboarding skills. They will explore keyboarding in class; however, students are expected to be self-driven and are to practice keyboarding at home, regularly. This is one skill, if acquired, that will pay back multiple times over, within their school life and will keep on paying back.

Elementary grade students will use technology in applied manner. A program “PLTW – Project Lead The Way” is being used for this purpose. Every grade level has a grade specific module - which they will learn. The emphasis is on problem solving using multi step process and collaboration.
