From Curtis Finch Jr., PhD
It’s that time again! The kindergarten class of 2025 will not hit the finish line until 2038, which seems like a lifetime. Now that my kids are grown and out of the house, I quickly learned over the years that grandma was right – time flies! One day it’s the first day of kindergarten. The next day they are headed out the door to the next stage of life. The good news, depending on your perspective, is that parenting never really stops. Usually, the only thing that fixes their adult problems now is a checkbook.
The annual pilgrimage to kindergarten is a reminder to teachers, parents, and the community that public school education is a vital connection to building our community. When public schools thrive, our property values go up, crime goes down, and the future workforce gets trained. We are all part of a 150-year journey of preparing opportunities for the next generation of students. The generations before us paid for our kids, and the cycle continues today. As you probably already know, Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) turned 90 years old this year. Our first school at New River started in 1934, long before I was born! We are grateful and proud of our community commitment these past 90 years.
The Class of 2038 will need to start enrolling very soon to make sure we have a spot for them next year. It’s never too early to start getting your paperwork and connection to DVUSD started; the kindergarten registration door will open November 1. Students need to be five years old by August 31, 2025, to enroll. If your child, or grandchild, will be 5 years old between September 1 and December 31, 2025, and you want to consider early enrollment, you can sign up for testing in February.
Kindergarten is an exciting new adventure. Because of the passage of DVUSD Bonds & Overrides over the past 31 years, kindergarten is free, full-day, and includes programs with specials in music, physical education, and art every day. There are also before and after-school care programs, but they are on a first-come, first-serve, basis, so you want to sign up as soon as the application process is opened. The positions fill up fast!
DVUSD has a long history of educational, fine arts, and athletic excellence. Thousands of our students use the “School of Choice” option to attend our schools. Hundreds of students are on wait lists to get into specific programs or schools because of the wide-range of options at DVUSD. To learn more about the 70+ State team and individual student titles and other #extraordinary student and staff achievements, go to www.dvusd.org/extraordinary . “Experience the Difference” at DVUSD and don’t miss out on your chance to enroll. You can go to www.dvusd.org/kinder on November 1 to download a registration form or fill out an Open Enrollment application for a special interest option. Since 95% of our students graduate on time, the DVUSD Superintendent will get the privilege of handing your student a coveted DVUSD diploma in 2038!
