New Program Opening in August 2022!

Throughout the Winter and Spring, our team will be working on, and posting here, more information as we plan the program. Please see below for the latest.

The screening dates and more program details have just been announced! Please see more below.

Qualifying / Age Requirements / Registration

  • Age Level Requirements

    Posted by:

Children must be potty-trained and age 4 by August 31, 2022, to enroll in the program. Initially, we were planning for ages 3 & 4, but we will only be able to have 4-year-olds in our first year. Community Education does offer general preschool for students who are age 3. This would be a great foundation before applying for our Gifted Preschool! Please see their website for further information.

Typically at this young age, a child needs to be evaluated by a licensed psychologist. We will honor these assessments (more information below), but they can be fairly costly. Because of this, our team has created a screener for our preschool program. We have more information and sign-up for the screener available here

    Screening & Qualifying Options -

Psychologist Evaluation - Beginning December 1st, 2021 - Children who have been evaluated by a licensed psychologist and score at the 90th percentile or higher, in any of the three state-approved areas of giftedness (Verbal, Quantitative, & Nonverbal) may qualify. Send score report to adam.laningham@dvusd.org for review and approval.

Early Bird Screening - Winter 2021-22 - Sign up now for our Gifted Preschool Screening ($50) being held on December 18th or January 8th. Qualifying students will receive documentation of approval to register for the program this spring.

General Screening - Spring & Summer 2022 - Sign-up for our Gifted Preschool Screening ($50). Dates and sign-up links will be posted on our website in January 2022. Qualifying students will receive documentation of approval to register for the program.

Screener information and Early Bird Screening sign-up are available here

As of 11/11/2021, our interest survey results showed a strong interest in the following three areas:

Our team will focus on these areas as we continue to plan.

  • Curriculum

    Posted by:

    The main curriculum -

We will use The Creative Curriculum for Preschool as the foundation of our program's curriculum. It has been used for many years in our Community Education preschool programs and has been very well received. It is a comprehensive, research-based curriculum that features inquiryexploration, and discovery as the foundation of all learning. This emphasis is similar to other Montessori and gifted teaching strategies/programs. As a content-rich, developmentally appropriate curriculum, it delivers academic rigor alongside social-emotional learning and cognitive development.

    Reading/ELA -

We are currently looking for a robust and flexible reading program to supplement our main curriculum. The Creative Curriculum for Preschool does have reading components, but we know we will have learners with advanced reading skills and potential.

    Math -

We will use Engage NY Math which aligns with our district math sequence. It has been used in Deer Valley for years and will allow our students to have a firm foundation and an easy transition later on.

The Creative Curriculum for Preschool does incorporate STEM, STEAM, problem-based, and project-based learning. We will be looking for supplements to this, but we are waiting to hire a teacher so they have more say in the directions they would like to take in this area. The school will also have the technology and other resources they are willing to share.

    World Languages -

We know this is an important area, and we are researching possible options. A lot will depend on what the school is already offering and budgets as we sort out the rest of the curriculum and its costs. More to come....

Our program will have a full Kindergarten classroom!

    - The first one next to the office and playground gate allowing for easy drop-off and pick-up

    - Direct access to the Kindergarten playground

    - With it's own restroom

    - Has a SMARTBoard and other technology

    - Shares a door with the Gifted Cluster Kindergarten classroom - Allowing for collaboration

    - Near the Nurse's Office, Library, and Techlabs

The school principal has also agreed to include our program in school specials classes! We do not have details yet, as it will depend on school schedules. The classes could include one or more opportunities each week for Art, Music, P.E. Library time, etc. More to come...

    In our classroom

A minimum of two adults will always be in the classroom. Most of the day will be the preschool teacher and one of two part-time classroom aids. When the teacher needs a lunch/break it will be the two classroom aids or a specials teacher and an aid.

    The Lead Instructor (Preschool Teacher)

    -  Will be a classified teacher. This is similar to most Community Education Preschool programs

    - They will be hired by and evaluated by the Manager of Gifted & Advanced Academics. The school principal will also help supervise this position and the program.

    - They will have to take additional gifted education classes/courses each year to continue in the position. This is in addition to the regular required professional development.

    - Will collaborate with other preschool teachers as well as gifted teachers throughout the school year

  • Lunch and Snacks

Snacks are included in the tuition fee.

Currently, 2021-22 school year, school lunches are provided at no cost. We do not yet know if that will continue next year. We will post that information as soon as we know.

Las Brisas has already invited our program to have lunch in the school cafeteria.
