** The district will be holding an immunization clinic on August 20 at Constitution Elementary School (18440 N 15th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85023) from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. The Arizona State Department of Health Services is NOT granting extensions on immunization schedules, keeping the current mandates and requirements in place during COVID-19. Please be sure that your student's immunizations are up to date, and that I have a current copy on file.**
Welcome to the Highland Lakes Health Center! My name is Kristina, and I'm happy to be the nurse for the Highland Lakes community. What exactly does a school nurse do, you ask?
"School nurses play an essential role in keeping children healthy, safe and ready to learn. They support student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting. The school nurse also addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and supports their achievement in the learning process." ~ National Association of School Nurses
What that means is the Health Office provides on-campus health screenings, assessments, and health education to students and staff. First-aid and general nursing care are also provided when needed. At Highland Lakes, we look at the whole person, therefore, students who have social/emotional or mental concerns will have their needs met by me in conjunction with the school counselor or the school psychologist. Any child who comes into the Health Office will be seen by me, however, the Health Center is NOT A PRIMARY CARE FACILITY OR URGENT CARE. By law, I am not allowed to make a medical diagnosis, or prescribe treatments or medications. When accidents or illness occur during school hours, basic first-aid and/or emergency care will be given according to the AZ State Board of Nursing standards and practices. I may suggest further medical follow up in certain circumstances. Further care and follow up are the responsibility of the parents.
