    Print-Friendly Version

    Dear DVUSD Families,

Welcome back for the 2022-23 school year! We look forward to seeing our students on the first day -- this Wednesday, August 3, 2022.

Our teachers, administrators, and support staff have been working hard all summer preparing for another extraordinary year together. For all you need to know about returning to school, visit www.dvusd.org/firstday22 and your child’s school website

    Meet the Teacher Events
We encourage all of you to attend the various Meet the Teacher/Open House events that are taking place before school starts and those that occur early in the school year for our upper grade students. Thank you to those parents and guardians who have already attended an event for this upcoming school year. Remember, it is never too early nor too late to get involved with your child’s education!

    School Communication & Forms
The PowerSchool registration support system sent an email to all parents with the required return to school and emergency forms. Please follow the instructions in that email to complete the forms electronically for each student in the District. (Each student has an individualized code to identify the child and complete the corresponding forms.) These forms may have been sent to a junk or spam folder, if you do not see it in your email inbox. During this process, please ensure all contact information is updated and correct, including your phone numbers and email address. The contact information provided is used by your child’s school and DVUSD’s communication system for email, text, and phone calls.

If you have not been receiving communication from the district or your child’s school, it may be the case that you have opted out or blocked your contact information in the system. To opt a phone number back into the system, call the Blackboard Phone Hotline at "855-502-STOP (855-502-7867)" from the phone line that has been opted out. To opt back in to receiving text messages from the system, text START to "60680" from the phone line that has been opted out for messages. If you have not received emails from your child’s school check your junk or spam messages and follow these instructions

    Dear DVUSD Families,

Can you believe that we are fast approaching the start of the fourth and final quarter of the school year? Thank you for continuing to stay informed on the latest updates relating to DVUSD by reading these District communications.

Safe & Healthy Schools Quarter 4
District leadership has met with various stakeholder groups (parents and staff) to collect input regarding the current COVID-19 Safety Plan. Based upon their input, changes to the COVID-19 Safety Plan will go into effect at the start of Quarter 4 (March 21, 2022). The following two points below highlight the major changes:

    • Volunteers and visitors will be allowed before, during and after the school day with the exception of visitors during lunch. (Visitors at lunch will be reevaluated at the end of the school year.) Visitors and volunteers will be subject to regular District and campus requirements.
    • Schools will no longer contact trace for COVID-19 at all grade levels. The only exception to this is if a severe and uncontrollable outbreak were to occur. Campus administration will, however, continue to communicate to the school community when an outbreak is declared by Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH).

These changes will be reflected in the Safety Plan before the start of Quarter 4 (March 21). In addition, beginning today, February 28, 2022, and based upon guidance from the CDC, there is no longer a mask mandate for students who ride District provided transportation. This means that face masks are now optional for students who utilize District provided transportation.

    Dear DVUSD Families,

Happy New Year! We hope that you and your family were able to enjoy the holiday season. This is our first parent update in 2022, and we ask that you take time to review the information below.

    Important Upcoming Dates
There are a few dates this upcoming calendar year that are scheduled differently than in years past. Previously, during weeks when we had a holiday or day when school was closed, we would not have a 90-minute early release on Friday. However, in an effort to maximize professional development for our teachers and staff, we WILL have 90-minute early release days on January 21 and February 25. In addition, April 29 is a 90-minute early release day, which follows state testing. These early release days allow our teachers and staff to collaborate and plan for ways to ensure success for all students. All early release days are marked on the District calendar at www.dvusd.org/Calendar

It also allows Title I schools to provide additional support materials for students including headphones and technology. Title I schools are identified to receive funding based on free and reduced lunch percentages. So, if you haven’t filled one out already, please complete the application as soon as possible. The 2022-2023 Budget Committee met for a second time on January 6, 2022. The committee is charged with reviewing stakeholder feedback to develop the district budget priorities for the next school year. At this second meeting, the committee reviewed results of the December budget priority input survey to find common themes amongst the responses and develop a forced-ranking survey. The forced-ranking survey goes live today and is open from January 10 through January 28 and is accessible at www.dvusd.org/BudgetSurvey. It is important for us to receive your response to this survey in order to ensure the budget meets the needs of our stakeholders. You can review presentations and information from the 2022-2023 Budget Committee on the DVUSD website as well. The committee will meet for a third and final time in February to review the results of the forced-ranking survey and develop the District’s budget priorities for the next school year.

The DVUSD updates will be sent monthly moving forward. Look for the next update in February. Finally, remember that there is no school next Monday, January 17 due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

    COVID-19 Update & Reminders
Changes to the DVUSD Safe & Healthy Schools plan will go into effect on Tuesday, January 4. These updates are posted on our Safe & Healthy Schools website and were explained in detail during the Safe & Healthy Schools Board Report at our most recent Governing Board Meeting. The most significant change to the plan relates to student quarantine. You can view a recording of the Safe & Healthy School’s Board Report by clicking here. Happy New Year and Looking Forward To 2022!

    Deer Valley Unified School District

  • December 16, 2021

    Dear DVUSD Families,

As we approach Winter Break, we want to provide you with some updates before students go on vacation.

First, there are changes to the DVUSD Safe & Healthy Schools plan that will go into effect  on Tuesday, January 4. These updates are captured on our Safe & Healthy Schools website as were articulated in detail during the Safe & Healthy Schools Board Report at our most recent Governing Board Meeting. The most significant change to the plan relates to student quarantine. You can also view a recording of the Safe & Healthy School’s Board Report by clicking here. If you have questions, please feel free to email us at remaininschool@dvusd.org

Next, DVUSD will offer COVID-19 testing on December 28, 2021 at the District Office. Visit www.dvusd.org/covidtesting for more information. Also, please be sure to continue to report positive cases of COVID-19 by following the procedures which are outlined at www.dvusd.org/covidreporting.

Third, DVUSD is aware of a troubling post that has been shared widely this week on the social media platform TikTok. The post refers to a threat to school safety “for every school in the USA, even elementary,” on Friday, December 17. The post appears to be part of a national TikTok trend and did not originate in our school district. We have heard reports from other districts that the same post is circulating in their schools. Nothing in the post indicates that any DVUSD schools are targeted. We have spoken with local law enforcement, who feel the information is unsubstantiated.

This situation serves as a good example of why it is important to avoid sharing posts online that refer to school safety threats. Even if they are not credible threats, they can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for our students, families, and staff. We ask our families to monitor their children’s social media activity and speak with them about proper behavior online. If you or your child become aware of any potential threat posted to social media or anywhere else, please notify a school staff member or trusted adult right away.

And finally, please remember that school resumes Tuesday, January 4, 2022 due to staff professional development on Monday.

Have a safe Winter Break and Happy New Year!

    Deer Valley Unified School District

For those who want more information on the vaccine, visit the CDC’s website. CLICK HERE to find vaccination opportunities in our community. The vaccination mini-clinics that occurred last week at three of our schools will have second dose shots on December 3, 2021. Specific hours for these mini-clinics will be announced in the near future.

Visit www.dvusd.org/covidtesting to pre-register, for additional testing locations, and more information.

    COVID-19 Dashboard Updates
The number of COVID-19 cases district-wide are decreasing. The latest COVID-19 dashboard has been posted at dvusd.org/dashboard. This dashboard includes the number of active, positive COVID-19 cases at each campus location. The numbers displayed reflect student and staff cases. The district will continue releasing these dashboards on a weekly basis until further notice.

    COVID-19 Reminders
While the district is seeing a decline in cases throughout our schools, we still need your support to keep our students safely learning in-person! It is imperative that if your child has tested positive for COVID-19, has COVID-19 symptoms, or had close contact with someone who has tested positive with COVID-19, that our DVUSD community continues to follow the DVUSD COVID-19 reporting procedures. These procedures include submitting a report as soon as possible and continuing to keep your child at home if he/she is sick, following all quarantine and isolation protocol requirements. (Visit www.dvusd.org/safetyplan to view the District’s existing layered mitigation plan). Additionally, DVUSD has developed a series of FAQs related to COVID that can be reviewed on dvusd.org/FAQ. As always, if you have questions about COVID-19 at DVUSD, send an email to remaininschool@dvusd.org.

    Mask Wearing
Outlined in DVUSD’s Safety Plan since the start of this pandemic, masks are required while riding on DVUSD busses per the federal mandate. This includes when student athletes are being transported for athletic competitions. Currently, masks are recommended, but not required on DVUSD grounds. We want our parents to clearly understand these options so that we can increase the amount of time kids are in school.

    Accessing Student Learning Online
Students do not need to fall behind when they are absent due to illness, quarantine, or for any other reason. Through Canvas, DVUSD’s digital learning management system, he or she will be able to learn through their account. Canvas provides a central place for teachers to collect and deliver content including digital resources, lessons, and materials and allows students the opportunity to continue learning with daily lessons. An Introduction to Canvas video for parents and students and information about creating a Canvas Parent observer account is available at: https://www.dvusd.org/Canvas.

You can find a printable document to navigate Canvas when your child will be absent for an extended period of time here. This document includes how to log into the Canvas account, find your child’s Canvas login, check out a device for Kindergarten-3rd grade students, and where to go for support.

Looking to make a Career Change? DVUSD May Be the Place for You!
Working at DVUSD affords many benefits—one of those includes being on your student’s schedule! The district offers a variety of paid holidays throughout the calendar year that align with the district schedule. There are a variety of positions open district-wide, for a complete list of job openings visit: https://careers.dvusd.org/.

    DVUSD Menu Changes & Challenges
Recently, you may have noticed discrepancies between menu items listed for your student’s school meals and what is being served in the cafeteria. School districts across the country have been struggling with COVID-related supply chain issues for the past year and a half, and it has become even more challenging lately. Some of our regularly ordered products are unavailable. We are doing all we can to ensure backup plans are in place, and we will continue to provide meals that are compliant with the USDA guidelines. Fortunately, we have extraordinary cafeteria managers and staff who are doing their absolute best to feed every child that comes through their kitchen, despite supply and staffing issues.

    Have a great week!

    Dear DVUSD Families,

As we approach a holiday weekend, we wanted to provide you with the latest updates and reminders.

#Extraordinary Achievements by DVUSD Students and Staff
Despite learning and working through a global pandemic during the past school year, Deer Valley students, teachers, and staff had one of our best school years for achievement in recent history! Scroll through the 2020-2021 Extraordinary Achievements publication to view the full list of accomplishments. This multi-page publication is packed with hundreds of local, state, and national honors celebrating academic, fine arts, and athletic achievements, as well as recognition for extraordinary teaching, staff accomplishments and community involvement.

    COVID Reminders
To help ensure that our campuses remain a safe and healthy environment for all of our students and staff, if your child has tested positive for COVID-19, has COVID-19 symptoms, or had close contact with someone who has tested positive with COVID-19, please follow the DVUSD COVID-19 reporting procedures. Make a report as soon as possible. Please continue to keep your child at home if he/she is sick, and follow all quarantine requirements if your child is identified as a close contact. (Visit www.dvusd.org/safetyplan to view the District’s existing layered mitigation plan). When students are sent to school sick, not only are they potentially exposing their classmates and school staff members to their illness, but that action may also cause our classrooms to transition to a virtual setting for a temporary period of time.

We encourage our students and staff to continue mitigation strategies including wearing masks. When a student who tests positive for COVID-19 is wearing a mask during the infectious period, other students who were exposed and also wearing a mask consistently and correctly are not subject to quarantine. This means that the student who tested positive and the identified close contact would both need to have been wearing a mask. We want our parents to clearly understand these options so that we can increase the amount of time kids are in school. This provision and others are allowed by CDC and MCDPH. As always, if you have questions about COVID-19 at DVUSD, send an email to remaininschool@dvusd.org. Additionally, DVUSD has developed a series of FAQs related to COVID that can be reviewed on dvusd.org/FAQ.

    COVID-19 Dashboard Updates
An updated COVID-19 dashboard has been posted to dvusd.org/dashboard. This dashboard includes the number of active positive COVID-19 cases at each campus location. The numbers displayed reflect student and staff cases. The district will continue releasing these dashboards on a weekly basis until further notice.

In closing, we hope you and your student(s) have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend! There is no school Monday or Tuesday. We will see everyone back at school on Wednesday, September 8.

    COVID Reminders

Maintaining our COVID-19 mitigation strategies, such as students and staff wearing masks at our schools, and other procedures will not only help our students remain in an in-person learning setting, but will also keep our students and staff safe. Remember if your child has tested positive for COVID-19, has COVID-19 symptoms, or had close contact with someone who has tested positive with COVID-19, please follow DVUSD COVID-19 reporting procedures.  Additionally, Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) now mandates that all student quarantines will be required. If your child is identified as a close contact and you receive the MCDPH quarantine letter, DVUSD is required by law to not permit the student on campus during the duration of the quarantine period. Students will be able to continue learning from home by accessing their work in Canvas.

MCDPH does allow for exceptions for students who are identified as a close contact to return to school without being quarantined. We want our parents to clearly understand these options so that we can increase the amount of time kids are in school. These provisions allowed by CDC and MCDPH are the following:

    • Fully vaccinated students are not subject to quarantine.
    • When a student who tests positive for COVID-19 is wearing a mask during the infectious period, other students who were exposed and also wearing a mask consistently and correctly are not subject to quarantine. This means that the student who tested positive and the identified close contact would both need to have been wearing a mask.
    • Students who have already tested positive for COVID-19 within 90 days of being identified as a close contact are not subject to quarantine.

As always, if you have questions about COVID-19 at DVUSD, send an email to remaininschool@dvusd.org.

    Immunization Opportunities

In partnership with the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, DVUSD will host another Free Immunization Clinic at Constitution Elementary School (18440 N 15th Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85023) this Friday August 27, 2021 from 2 p.m. –5:30 p.m. There will be no out of pocket costs for these immunizations, which include the COVID-19 vaccination for children 12 years old and older. Those 12 years old and above will receive the Pfizer vaccine. Those 18 and above will receive the Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson vaccine. More information about the event including the event flyer is detailed on this webpage: www.dvusd.org/RemainInSchool.  For those looking to get their student the COVID-19 vaccination, locations throughout the county can be found here: https://www.maricopa.gov/5659/COVID-19-Vaccine-Locations. A variety of locations throughout the Valley, including at our DVUSD District Office, are also offering COVID-19 testing. Find a location near you by visiting the COVID-19 Testing sites webpage.

    COVID-19 Dashboard Updates

The most recent COVID-19 dashboard is live on dvusd.org/dashboard. This dashboard includes the number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases by each week in August at each campus location. The numbers displayed could reflect either a student or a staff case. The district will continue releasing these dashboards on a weekly basis until further notice.

    Dear DVUSD Families,

You should have received communication from DVUSD on Sunday regarding the importance of keeping your student(s) home while sick and information on the new quarantine measures released by the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH). DVUSD began implementing the new measures today, Monday, August 16. You can view the letter here which outlines that student quarantines are now mandatory.

In light of these new changes, we would like to provide you with the latest updates.

    New Communication System
DVUSD, our schools, and teachers have been communicating through a new communication tool this school year. We understand that there have been some parents who, for a variety of reasons, have been missing emails. As we continue to work with this new system and our technology department to resolve these issues, please check your junk or spam folders for any messages that were sent from DVUSD email addresses as this is where many of these emails are being found. For more tips on how to ensure you are receiving emails from your student(s) school, visit our parent notification system page.

    Canvas Support for Parents
DVUSD has developed a helpful webpage of Canvas resources for parents who are assisting their students with online learning and need to familiarize themselves with the learning management system. These video tutorials, FAQs and helpful guides can be found on this webpage.

    COVID-19 Dashboard Update
Beginning next week, DVUSD will update the COVID-19 dashboard on a more frequent basis. Additionally, be on the lookout for a FAQ page to be posted on the Remain in School page in the coming weeks. This FAQ site will address the most pressing COVID-19 related questions relating to DVUSD.

Help Support our #Extraordinary Campus Health Offices
In an effort to keep our students safely on campus and in the healthiest, most supported environments, DVUSD is looking for support staff in our health offices. If you, a friend, or family member have medical credentials including but not limited to registered nursing, CNA, paramedic or other medical qualifications or licensure, DVUSD is in need of staff to support our health offices district-wide. Please check out https://careers.dvusd.org/ for the list of job openings.

Have a great week and stay safe!

    Dear DVUSD Families,

The first two weeks of school have come and gone.  These two weeks have been full of much excitement and positive energy as well as numerous challenges. We can see how excited the students in our community are to be in school. They enjoy socializing with their friends and they love their teachers! This is the reason we are communicating this important information related to the continuity of our in-person operations one day earlier than our usual parent update on Mondays.

Our reality is the level of COVID-19 spread within our community continues to increase. While just over a month ago, virtually none of our zip codes were in high transmission, we now find ourselves in a position where all of our zip codes have had substantial increases in their case counts and fall into high transmission.

While we had hoped for a relatively normal school year in 2021-22, we are seeing that our operations are being greatly impacted by this level of community spread. In our first two weeks back on campus, we have had more than 150 student and staff positive cases of COVID-19. This has resulted in over 2,000 DVUSD students already being identified as a close contact. We have also had parents knowingly send their children to school when sick. This has caused us to transition several classrooms to a temporary virtual learning format due to numerous students and staff becoming ill. This puts an enormous strain on our campus leaders, nurses, front office staff, teachers and support staff. This level of strain is also being felt by all of our neighboring school districts. The end result is less in-person school time for our students. We also recognize this strain is felt within our student and parent communities as they must adjust to shifting learning environments with minimal notice.

Last week, Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) revised their quarantine measures in order to respond to this increase. Effective Monday, August 16, all student quarantines will be required per this recent MCDPH mandate. If your child is identified as a close contact and you receive the MCDPH quarantine letter, DVUSD is required by law to not permit the student on campus during the duration of the quarantine period. MCDPH requires public schools to deliver this letter to parents, and DVUSD will utilize the Blackboard communication tool to deliver it.

Families will need to check their email daily (including spam and junk mail folders). Please note that this change of quarantine requirements will be applied to new positive cases and close contacts on and after August 16.

As we have communicated in previous parent updates, public health agencies such as the CDC and MCDPH strongly recommend that eligible individuals get vaccinated and that all individuals wear a mask when indoors. Visit https://www.maricopa.gov/5641/COVID-19-Vaccine for more information regarding the COVID-19 vaccine.

In closing, we know how much you want your child to attend in-person school. This sentiment is shared by our administrators, teachers and staff. But, in order to do this we need your support. We do not want to risk cancelling in person events such as athletics and fine arts competitions, or having to continuously transition in-person classrooms to virtual learning. Please keep your child at home if he/she is sick and follow all quarantine requirements if your child is identified as a close contact. (See www.dvusd.org/covidreporting for District procedures on reporting. Visit www.dvusd.org/safetyplan to view the District’s existing layered mitigation plan.) In short, DVUSD respectfully requests that the community support our students by working to decrease the spread of COVID-19.

Questions can be sent to remaininschool@dvusd.org

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
    Deer Valley Unified School District

1 Close contact is defined as someone who was within 6 feet for a total of 15 minutes or more within 2 days prior to illness onset, regardless of whether the contact was wearing a mask.

    Dear DVUSD Families,

We hope your child(ren) had a wonderful first day of school whether attending in-person or online. We want to provide you with the latest school information in this Monday Parent update. DVUSD plans to send updates for parents every Monday through August.

    • We begin with an important reminder for parents who pick up their student(s) after school. Please make sure you stay clear of the bus lanes. Today, cars arriving to pick up students blocked bus lanes at several schools. This delayed students from loading the buses and leaving school. Some students were delayed in getting home on the bus by 30 or more minutes due to this issue. Thank you for your attention to this during student pick-up.

    • If you haven’t had a chance to review the DVUSD Safety Plan that you received in an email last Friday, please take a few minutes to read the updates about quarantines and some COVID-19 prevention measures. You can always find this plan at www.dvusd.org/safetyplan.

    • Remember, that while face masks are optional this year while on campus, the CDC recently updated their recommendations for face mask usage when students are indoors. In addition, there is an exception to this face mask optional rule when students utilize District transportation. Due to the Centers for Disease Control mass transit federal order, all bus riders must wear a face mask. This federal order supersedes any state law pertaining to face masks.

    • As was the case last year, school meals will continue to be free throughout the 2021-22 school year. When students choose individual portions such as a beverage (including milk) or a snack item, charges will apply.

    • Back to School forms are available online this year! You will need a PowerSchool Parent account to access these important forms. You want to sign up for this account as it makes the beginning of the year paperwork process much easier for you!  If you have not already set up your account, please contact your school’s registrar for the access information specific to your student. You will need this information to set up your PowerSchool Parent account. These forms will be due in the coming weeks, so please set up your account soon!

    • DVUSD has a strong partnership with Southwest Behavioral Health and Services (SBHS) and has campus clinicians at our elementary and middle school campuses. There are wellness counselors at each of our high school locations as well. This is a great resource for our DVUSD families and social/emotional health.

    • As the first week of school continues for your student, we ask that you continue practicing good routines at home, such as having an easy morning routine, sticking to early bedtimes, and establishing a quiet area to complete homework. Remember if your child has tested positive for COVID-19, has COVID-19 symptoms, or had close contact with someone who has tested positive with COVID-19, please follow DVUSD COVID-19 reporting procedures.

Have a great first week of school!

    Panorama SEL Student Survey

DVUSD values the importance of supporting students’ social-emotional well being. A common tool that has been used by schools across the country for decades is the use of student surveys that gauge their perceptions of themselves and their schools. Last year, the Arizona legislature passed legislation which requires public schools to obtain parent permission when keeping this data for more than one year. Therefore, going forward, DVUSD has a parent permission form which all parents complete when they register their child(ren) which allows DVUSD to administer this survey to our students. This survey is important as it helps schools meet the social-emotional and safety needs of its students!

    Vaccination Opportunity

In partnership with the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH), DVUSD will host another Free Immunization Clinic at Constitution Elementary School (18440 N 15th Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85023) Thursday, July 29, 2021 from 12 p.m. (noon) – 6 p.m. There will be no out of pocket costs for these immunizations, which include the COVID-19 vaccination for children 12 years old and older. Free Meals for All Students 2021-2022
