Traditional School Update

EVENT CANCELED

As you are probably aware, DVUSD announced Tuesday that all on-site school-sponsored events that involve mass gatherings are canceled through at least April 13… That includes Monday’s scheduled Meet The Principal and Teachers Night at The Traditional Academy at Bellair… we are very sad about this, but it is a necessary step to keep our community healthy.

There is way to stay involved! When it is safe to do so, we will set up a “virtual meet and greet” with the wonderful staff of the new Traditional Academy. To receive updates, just sign up at www.dvusd.org/TraditionalEmail. Until then, wash your hands, cover coughs, and keep your social distance!

As part of the current School Boundary Initiative, DVUSD is creating an option to create an open-boundary choice school with a Traditional focus at Bellair Elementary. To understand more about this, please see Frequently Asked Questions. Questions and answers will be updated as needed. If you have questions or would like to receive email updates about the new traditional school, click here.

Curricular Resources Preview

The Traditional Academy at Bellair encourages parents and other interested community members to preview curricular resources  for the school. You can preview the curricular resources by going to the District Office (20402 N 15th Ave, Phoenix, AZ). You can do this during regular business hours.  The window to preview the curricular resources will end on April 7th, 2020.

What is a traditional school/academy?

Among many facets, a traditional school provides a challenging learning environment, focuses on parent involvement, emphasizes a strict code of conduct, and provides for advanced learning opportunities with a back-to-basics philosophy.

Has a principal been hired?

What does the term “acceleration” mean at a traditional school?

Acceleration is the advancement of student learning  at a rate that places them ahead of where they would be in the regular school curriculum.

Why is the District wanting to repurpose Bellair into a traditional school?

Given declining enrollment at Bellair, the District wishes to provide more options to families who live in and outside the current Bellair attendance zone.  The District also wishes to recapture many students who currently attend charter schools who have a focus on traditional education. There are several traditional charter schools located in or near the southern boundaries of our District’s attendance zone.

Do other school districts have “traditional” schools?

Many surrounding districts have added a traditional school. Some of these districts are Peoria, Dysart, Scottsdale, Alhambra, Phoenix, Madison, and Washington.

What is an open-boundary choice school?

An open-boundary choice school is a school that does not have an attendance zone.  All students will apply through an open-enrollment process. This is a common characteristic of traditional schools.

Has the Governing Board approved an open-boundary for Bellair?
